My playlist just rolled over to Grace is Gone by DMB and I'm amazed at how well the writing is and how it throws that conspicuous twist in their to send a chill down your back.

What are some other songs that have good lyrics that make you think or is based on something?

Anything by Rush

I agree with Blip Blop too!

If would like a laugh, listen to They Might be Giants.

Rush example :

Manhattan Project

Imagine a time when it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon that would settle the score
Whoever found it first would be sure to do their worst.
They always had before...

Imagine a man where it all began
A scientist pacing the floor
In each nation, always eager to explore
To build the best big stick
To turn the winning trick.
But this was something more...

The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun and it hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots tried to hold it back
Fools tried to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say

Imagine a place where it all began
Gathered from across the land
To work in the secrecy of the desert sand
All of the brightest boys
To play with the biggest toys
More than they bargained for...

Imagine a man when it all began
The pilot of "Enola Gay"
Flying out of the shockwave on that August day
All the powers that be, and the course of history,
Would be changed forevermore...

Bad Religion - Parallel

sleeping on a time bomb, staring into space
there's an ocean of unpleasantries we are not prepared to face
sitting on the fence post to watch the storm roll in
and terrified of the damage it will bring when it begins
it will begin

splintered dreams of unity (our lives are parallel)
so far from reality (our lives are parallel)
independent trajectories (our lives are parallel)
separate terms of equality (our lives are parallel)

our lives are parallel

is there no redemption? no common good?
is there nothing we can do for ourselves? or only what we should?

comes the hard admission of what we don't provide
goes the insistence on the ways and means that so divide

they so divide

side by side suffering loneliness (our lives are parallel)
phony collective progress (our lives are parallel)
accepting that it's all such a mess (our lives are parallel)
gesturing without hope of redress (our lives are parallel)

our lives are parallel

forging little plays of deception and pain
as we watch our foundation crumble away
staggering like birds against a hurricane
and trying all the while to stay out of each other's way

broken dreams of unity (our lives are parallel)
independant trajectories (our lives are parallel)
screaming out for understanding (our lives are parallel)
turning inward and suffering (our lives are parallel)

Bad Religiong - Recipe for Hate

can't you feel it, can't you see it
the promise of prosperity,
it's overwhelming you and me
it afflicts us like a disease,
ubiquitous compelling too
we cling to you like crazy glue,
and inject such a potent seed
it's best for all humanity,

the spread of culture,
the sword of progress,
the vector of suffrage a warm and
septic breeze,
the pomp and elation,
the duty and vocation,
the blood of the hybrid
it's just a recipe

re-living our ancestry
the frightful lack of harmony,
our fore-fathers who led the way,
their victims are still here today,
now it's time to erase the story
of our bogus fate,
our history as it's portrayed
it's just a recipe for hate

Yea, BR is my favorite band

I know that not everyone here likes DMB , but I have always loved "Seek Up"
These are the lyrics off the "Live at Luther College" version, my fav...

Fall back again, fall back again...
Fall back again, fall back again...

Oh, life it seems a struggle between
What we see, what we do
I'm not going to change my ways
Just to please you or appease you
Well, look at this crowd, five billion proud
Willing to punch it out
Right, wrong, weak, strong
Ashes to ashes, all fall down
Oh, look around about this round about
This merry-go-round and round
If at all God's gaze upon us fall
It's with a mischievous grin, look at Him

Forget about the reasons
And the treasons we are seeking...
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be kept at bay
Forget about being guilty
We are innocent instead...
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Oh, look at me in my fancy car
And my bank account
Oh, how I wish I could take it all down
Down to my grave, God knows I'd save and save
Man, take a look again, take a look again
Things you have collected
Well, in the end it all piles up so tall
To one big nothing, one big nothing at all

Forget about the reasons
And the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty,
We are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
You know how it is...

You seek up an emotion
And your cup is overflowing
You seek up an emotion
Sometimes your well is dry
You're looking for a monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you,
The devil's not going, "Ha, ha, ha, ha"
"Ha, ha, ha, ha..."

Say, oh, say...

Oh, late at night, with TV's hungry child
His belly swells...
Well, for the price of a Coke? or a smoke
I could keep alive those hungy eyes
Man, take a look again, take a look again, take a look again
Everyday things change, basically they stay the same

Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be kept at bay
Forget about being guilty
We are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away, oh...

You seek up an emotion,
And your cup is overflowing

You seek up an emotion
Sometimes your well is dry, oh

You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you

But when he finds his way to you,
The devil's not going, "Ha, ha, ha, ha."
"Ha, ha, ha, ha..."

Fall back again, fall back again
Ashes...
Fall back again, fall back again...

Any Song by Pink Floyd. But when you listen to Pink Floyd, you listen to whole albums because they flow together and are connected. So go listen to these albums by them:

Dark Side Of The Moon
Wish You Were Here
The Wall
The FInal Cut
The Division Bell
Animals

Here are lyrics from their song "Time" off of "Dark Side Of The Moon":

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation in the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be there when I can
When I come in cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

I have never heard lyrics that even come close to Pink Floyd. Probably second most thought provoking lyrics are from Bob Dylan.

Also, try these songs from a personal favorite of mine, Jackson Brown:

The Pretender
Late For The Sky
Something Fine
Song For Adam
Rock Me On The Water
Gone To Sorrow

Stereophonics - Same Size Feet

A weeks too long, not to ring.
Re-colours her hair, and waits for him.
No cat against dog, just head over heels
Sex twice a date, best time in years.
Oh no, why hasn't he phoned?
She has to wait until he's on his own
Lying and denying so nobody knows.
I'll tell her this week is what he tells her to keep her on loan.
He'll buy her one day
Sex drives, oral highs, cheating wives and spies.
Cream cakes, coffee dates, throwing gifts, goodbye.
Passed away for the day had a change of kind.
Sex changes, to mundane for the average mind
Oh no she just can't say.
Where he is and where he's been.
Look prim and straight. Like she's always been.
All that she saved for went missing again.
She could be wrong
She could be wrong
She could be wrong
It looks like, It looks like the words got around

They found a body in the lake maybe it wasn't really his name.
Same colour, same weight, same size feet
It's the not knowing that kills you.
Oh no the clocks stopped slow, every time you're on your own.
The hide from the spies. So nobody knows
Scratch through the pages of the lazy days news for a clue.
Still looking for you

Whatever happened to those guys, anyway? "Ich Bin Ein Auslander" was one of my favorite songs... I even saw them play live here in San Jose, many years ago (at One Step Beyond; anyone from here remember that place?)

Click the sig for some information. Ich Bin Ein Auslander was one of the best off of Dos Dedos Mi Amigos but it was their last album together. Clint did the music for a few movies. One of them was Pi which he also had a cameo as the photographer.

I dont really listen to lyrics, so when a song grabs me because of them, I notice. Some bands with great lyrics include:

some Metallica (Fade to Black especially)
Matthew Good Band
Dream Theater (especially The Glass Prison and their Six Degrees stuff)

thats all I cna think of off the top o' my head
