One of the cool things about the SC is that it stays on for 2 minutes. Every 30 seconds, there's a very brief pause, just enough to let you know it's time to move to a different quadrant of your mouth. With a manual toothbrush they tell you to brush for 5 minutes, but how many people time it? With the SC, unless you turn it off prematurely (my hygenist told me not to!), you brush for 2 minutes. I try to hit all areas well in that 2 min, and use a little dab of toothpaste (my dentist told me that's actually really beneficial - hardens the enamal).Originally posted by: jrichrds

I believe the Sonicare manual even makes a point to not apply too much pressure...only enough so that the bristles are lightly touching your teeth/gums.
Consumer Reports tested electric toothbruses, and said that none were able to clean any better than a manual toothbrush.
Whether a dentist recommends electric toothbrushes or not, it seems most all of them prefer a standard, no-frills toothbrush for themselves. I'm told electric toothbrushes are beneficial mainly to those who have horrible manual brushing technique.

I got my sonic care off ebay, and I can say that it makes my teeth whiter, and my gum no longer bleeds like when I used
manual brush. It is a small investment, but it pays for itself because it shortens your visit to the dentist!

errrr, no.. I wasnt saying you wouldnt need to floss. For me, I dont have to spend as much time flossing as before using Sonicare. I wasnt really sold on the Sonicare until my first dentist visit after buying it.

I don't know, but I doubt that there is any SonicCare that doesn't have the 2 minute timer. I read the specs in this thread on the as-yet-not-released Elite model and the only thing it has that my 2+ year old one I got from Costco doesn't have is the dual speed, which seems to me unnecessary. There's even a brand new Professional Elite 7800 for around 100 bux. Do a search on eBay for "sonicare".
The best price for the 4100 (ps1) seems to be $40 plus shipping.
According to the sonicare website the 2 higher models have more replacement heads included and some timer feature.
Which model do you guys recommend (and why) ?
