A 2012 Versa hatch is just short of 2700lbs...and only has 122hp (the pre-2012 has even more weight). The Sonic would feel like a sports car in comparison with 148hp. The Mazda is just particularly light for this segment...

^It seems that AOL autos does not agree with the Insideline weight numbers, but that might be because AOL autos only seems to have the 1.8l engine instead of the 1.4l turbo engine...either way, the Sonic has by and far the most power in the class.

I would take the Sonic over any save the Fiesta or Fit. Those are the three I'm recommending to folks that ask.
I was bored one day, and drove several trim and models of the Sonic.
It's pretty damn good.

Mazda 3 is in a different class. The Fit is definitely a tough competitor. I haven't driven either, but if the reviews are to be believed, the Sonic handles better than the Fit and provides more power with nearly the same utility. Without driving them, I'd be leaning toward the Sonic. That being said, I might completely change my mind if I drove them both.
