I figure most people have forgotten about Sonique by now, but I have been keeping an eye on their website hoping they'd make good on their promises and deliver a new player. Believe it or not, Sonique 2 has been in development the whole time, and they actually have a beta release out now. Go to the Sonique website to grab it. The new interface looks pretty spiffy!

PS. I expect plenty of "yawn" responses, but I figure that even with Winamp and iTunes being the amazing programs that they are, the Sonique guys should be given a chance, too.

PPS. I tried the seamless track transition feature, and it works amazingly well!!! No cracks, no hiss, nothing! Just like listening to the CD. I don't remember Winamp or any other player having this feature... (I could be wrong of course.)

Winamp 5 does have this, it's called Crossfade.

Crossfade is very different from seamless transitioning. Seamless transition does exactly what the name describes, ie. connect the two tracks without a noticable break, whereas crossfade starts playing one track before the other finishes, fades out the previous track and fades in the next track. Crossfade is great when you play a mix of various songs, but when you have a non-stop DJ mix divided into several tracks or an album on which there is some connecting material between tracks, crossfade does not work very well. Seamless transition is excellent in those cases.

edit: Seamless transitioning doesn't work THAT well after all, it just stumbled between two tracks. The problem seemed to be that volume was relatively high at the exact point of transition. With lower level transitions I noticed no breaks. Oh well, it is called a BETA for a reason...

I'm kinda stuck on Winamp5 as of now, Sonique would have to offer something really good for me to switch.

I think the audio player area is pretty saturated right now. Lots of good/adaquate players, including Winamp, Foobar, iTunes, WMP. I don't think we need another one. Always good to have innovation, though.

People made some pretty cool skins for Sonique, but I admit I haven't looked at anything as far as skins goes for any of the more recent media players.

Well Sonique has been around for a VERY long time. For a long time it had a much better decoding engine when compared to Winamp. I haven't used Sonique in quite some time though.

you're using a beta version of sonique 2.. from what i gathered in the sonique 2 forum, this release is compiled with the debug mode that's why it uses alots of resources.

probably. i know it's beta but ... oh well

it reminds me so much of the Sonique 1.xx. Then again, i haven't used Sonique 1.xx since 1999.

Whoah, I thought Sonique was toast years ago. I used to use it, but quit when I thought it was gone. I'm gonna try it out, thanks for the heads up.
