Well, I swung by Best Buy today.

They have the TV, and the price tag on the set has $2,183.50. It's got one of their usual big yellow clerance price tags.

I asked the salesperson to ring it up on the machine, and it came back to $2,848.92.

So yes, it appears there may have been a pricing error. It appears to have been corrected in the computers, but some of the stores still have the display tags of $2,183.50. Either that, or they are in deed clearing them out at $2,183.50 and just can't get their computer systems sraight.

Regardless I got a price verification from them for $2,183.50 and am probably going to go pick one up here in a few hours.

Good luck!

Just walked into BestBuy and got one of them @ 2183.50

The computer does ring up approx. $2850/- but the display sticker says it is 2183.50. The manager came up and said it was a pricing error and said they are removing the wrong printed tag rightaway.

Interestingly, before walking into the store I had called 3 Bestbuy locations in CT, and all of them mentioned that they had none in stock even in the warehouse.

But, when I went into the store the computer said 99 in stock, so the CSR lied to me over the phone.

Anyways got lucky on the deal,

Thanks to Steven......

Anyone know if you can get these tvs for this price in the maryland area.

I would just like to say from what I have heard Toshiba makes the best HDTV televisions.

Ordered mine from Sears today. Delivery tomorrow.

Got them to not only price match, but give me a year with no interest.

Now that is a deal!

I almost got another 10% off because the lady helping me was just hired, but when she tried the price was below cost for Sears so she couldn't do it. Needless to say this is one hot deal. Thanks for the great post!

ProUser,

Could you please tell us how you manage to make Sears to PM?
I stopped by the local BB (DE) Wed during lunch, the CSR there say the price of the Sony is 2999.

I would definantly have to think that they would come out with an update for the HDTV's that are out now. Something like that would cause one heck of a riot amongst consumers who already spent the money for an HDTV.

How was I able to Price Match?

The local Best Buy here had the Clerance tag on the TV showing $2,183.50. I went there, and had them print me out a Price Verification - which came out at the 2.8g price tag. The sales person simply wrote in pen on there the clerance price.

I just took that to Sears, and told them that's how much Best Buy was selling the TV. They didn't even call the store even despite the fact the price was written in pen, with the expensive price crossed out.

But if your local best buy has them on display for the clerance price, simply have the Sears sales rep call over there and ask. If it's not on display for that price, I think your pretty much out of luck because the price has been corrected in the computers now.

Does anyone have projection tv and video games? I hear the games will burn projection tv if the game is paused or played a long time. How to handle it?

I need a BB receipt also, if someone can provide one.

Also, anyone in the LA/Orange County area know of a Best Buy that still has these for the clearance price?

Dvorak is usually right on the money on these things....and history has shown that you should never buy a standard that isn't accepted officially yet (remember Betamax and Laserdisc?). That's why I'm waiting.

Darnit!!!

I just bought the 51" version of this tv like 2 weeks ago for $2250!!!! And i thought that was a good deal cuz normally it's 2500, and Goodguys.com had a $250 plus free ship and no tax. But this deal just blows mine away! Dang... so good. I gotta check this one out and see if BBY or sears still has this. Dang... I feel ripped off =( I hope they still have these for this price in stock...

Stopped by the local BB today.... price tag was 2699, but I explained to the nice lady that several BB stores across the country had clearanced this item out at $2189, and asked her to look it up in the computer to confirm...

After some time, she came back to me with a printout from the inventory system showing a note about the $2189 price. It indicated that this price had been a mistake and that, while some stores had sold units at this cost, they should stick with the advertised price.

Looks like this deal just got a lot colder.... though seems like people could still maybe use receipt printouts for pricematching at Sears.... not that I'm advocating anything untoward.

You get what you pay for. I would look at the specs before thinking this is a great price. Sure, if you can get it for ~$2,200, it could be a good deal, but remember that you probably will be watching it for the next 5 years. So ask yourself this, "Should I spend a little more to get a better HDTV?" THe Sony specs and reputation aren't great (at least by my standards) when compared to Hitachi or Pioneer HDTV's.

Basically, go to Sony's product page and it doesn't list how many lens! For example, my Hitachi 61" Ultravision HDTV has 5 lens (the best rated for HDTV's) and supports 480i/480P/720P/1080i resolutions. Visit Hitachi's site for indepth HDTV info about lens and features. My Hitachi cost me $2,600, got a 5 year warrantee for just $200 more (I recommend it for such an investment). Also, it has 1200 lines resolution.

This SONY probably only has a 3 lens and only supports 1080i, 480p, 480i. Where's 720P??? Trust me, if you have room, get a 60+ in model. The Sony probably only has 1000 lines. So make your decisions based on what you'll be enjoying for the next 5 years (until you get a plasma), not whether you'll be saving a few bucks now. You're paying a lot of money as it is, wo why not get something better for a few dollars more? Hitachi is the most respected HDTV manuf. but don't take my word for it. Compare them yourself.

That is true that you get what you pay for but they arent even in the same price class. Just because you can afford $2200 doesnt mean you can afford $3000+. This tv is the best that I have seen for the money. That is almost like saying why waste your money on a $3000+ on a Pioneer projection when you can spend $7000 on a Plasma. A good Pioneer or Hitatchi cost more than $3k. Anyways....my 2cents.

From my understanding, I believe that Mitsubishi makes the best projection tv's and Sony makes the best tube tv's. That's why the Mitsubishi big screens can only be found in some stores...

Hmm, I think $2600 IS in the same price class as $2200. It's NOT 2x the price. Or am I doing the math wrong? A better analogy would be spending another $1000 for leather seats and more options in a $25,000 car that you'll drive for 10 years. I think you miss the point about enjoying it for many years to come. Oh, I forgot that Mitsubishi also make excellent TV's, but way too expensive and thus I would consider "not in same price class." Hitachi makes lens for many manufacturers, much like Trinitron CRT's in monitors. This means that they make quality parts.

The important thing is, is it a good idea to sacrifice quality and performance for a few hundred dollars? Again, I'm not questioning wheather the Sony is right for you, I'm merely suggesting that people should research a product and not make a purchase solely on price. I still believe that these days, spending a little more will go a long way. Just take a look at Hitachi HDTV's because they are quality HDTV's, looks good, great specs, and also at a great price point (look for sales). Try Video Only in your area.
