I just bought a 57" Sony HDTV Widescreen tv (KP-57HW40) from Best Buy for $2183.50. When I went looking yesterday it was $3000. (it still says $2999 on the website) Im not sure if this is GA only. I know that all the local (atlanta area) BB have them for that price. Beautiful tv for a great price.

Sounds almost too good to be true. Even Crazy Eddie gets $2,439.95 for this model. Good score.

I'm a die-hard Mitsubishi owner (55857) and don't care much for Sony but...wow...that's a good deal.

How is the stretching of regular sized shows to 16:9 ratio on this sucker? Are they any good like the Mitsubishi Diamond series?

I get the tv delivered tomorrow so i havent got to test the stretching at home yet. It looked pretty good at BB. As for stand alone converters I haven't looked to much but what I have seen has been around $500. BTW...Mitsubishi does make one heck of a tv. I just couldnt afford one.

Anyone knows how set-top box decoders work?

Do I need it if the signal is coming from cable company not "over the air"?

Unfortunately all of these current HDTV sets will soon be boat anchors. If you buy one that doesn't have a DVI or Firewire input for the connection of future devices( DTV, DISH, or DVHS)you will not be able to receive a true HDTV broadcast. You will get the 480 signal and it will upconvert to a higher resolution. They're being released as we speak and they need to get rid of all of their old stock.

i agree with you completely...but at $2k it's not a bad deal. after all, the DVI format hasn't been agreed on as the standard yet...and even if it is we are most likely several years away from the time when the switch is flipped and those without DVI are screwed. by that time sets will be even cheaper and who knows what other technology (DLP, Plasma) will be affordable for everyone. and for all we know there may even be a way (converter, etc.) to get the HDTV signal on a non DVI set. personally, i am holding out to purchase a DVI ready set this fall.

Hope I got a great deal today.

BestBuys in the Atlanta Area (now appears nationwide) on Monday lowered the price of the Sony 57hw40 to ..... 2183.50 !!
I just finished my basement, but wanted to wait a while for the big screen, however, at this price, I could'nt hold out.

To add a sweeter deal, best buy currently gives you a coupon booklet if you purchase a DVD player and I bought one a few weeks ago. In that booklet there is a $100 dollar off coupon for ANY 16X9 digital TV. BINGO

Here is where it gets sweet...... I went to my local Sears, and they agreed not only to match the $2183.50, but also let me use the $100 off coupon. AND because I had the best buy internet description/price of the hw40 showing FREE Shipping, they waived the $40 shipping charge. ***PLUS 1 year no interest !!!!

2183.50
-100.00
-----------
$$ 2083.50 + tax

****few notes*****

the current best buy internet discription/price on the hw40 shows it at $2999.99 + free shipping. You have to call the best buy store and verify the price, better yet, stop by and they can give you a price verification reciept showing $2183.50.

When I called BB this am, the salesman first told me a price of $2817 and said that is what is shown on the floor tag, but I asked him to verify it in the computer, he surprisingly told me 2183.50 but had none in stock. However, the atlanta warehouse had 348 in stock and I could pick it up at the warehouse.

Also, that coupon booklet with the $100 coupon is only with the purchase of a DVD player, but the store I went to had many booklets laying around like a promo. (i got one for my neighbor).

The main reason for Sears was the 1 year no interest financing and the in-home service agreement. the 3 year was $299, 5 yr $499. I opted for the 3 year, but now debating if I should go back and get the 5 yr. Please anyone give me feedback on service agreements in general and if I should get the 5 yr plan.

From what I read on other boards, this is an excellent TV and any comments or suggestions would be apprieciated.

Thanks goes to "stevent76" for first bringing this hot deal to us.

P.S. any suggestions on a <$400 progressive scan DVD Player?

Leem -

Where can I find more information on the 1 year no interest financing?

I was planning on buying the 50 inch Toshiba from Sears this weekend. After pricematch, tax, and shipping the total comes out to about $2,000 to $2,100. If I can get the 57 inch Sony for about $2350 out the door I might seriously consider that instead. $350 for 7 diag. inches is a good deal in my mind.

And I would be VERY, VERY interested in the 1 year NO Interest! Please, any information on that would be greatly appreciated!

I think sears had a promo last week or so on 0% big screens. the promo did end, but the very nice salesperson said he would still give it to me since it was so close.

**** hint, always be nice and ASK what they can do. You can mention that Circuit City has the same tv, they will also pricematch, and they DO currently have %0 finance. Also, if you dont have a sears card that can be a nice barter ( also extra 10% off).

Hmmm I thought I read they will have some sort of converter for DVI on these types of sets.

SONY makes some good stuff, and bad stuff. I've had bad experiences with Sony TV's. Overpriced I think. I just bought a Hitachi Ultravision 61" HDTV. 1200 lines of resolution (many only have 1000). All the connections except I wish it had COMPONENT on front for my Xbox Oh well...games and Progressive scan DVD's look great! This has the 5 element lens and does 480i/720p/1080i. It cost me $3000 after tax and a 5 year warrrantee and local shipping and 0% 1 year. Get the 5 year for peace of mind cause these TV's are expensive to fix! Sansung is cheap and doesn't have the quality. Sony is ok. Hitachi has the highest quality/consumer ratings for HDTV's. Sure, it's a little more expensive, but after comparing it to the other brands, it's better than everything except high end Pioneers. My advice is, don't listen to anyone! Compare the features, image quality, and overall quality. Now...what should I do with the old 60" projection TV? It weighs like 300 lbs...

I stopped by Circuit City last night to look for some Component Video cables and when I told them what I paid for the tv they insisted that it had to be a different model. 3 employees standing there and none believed that I got it for that price.

Hi Everyone,
Can someone please scan a copy of the receipt and post so I can try to pricematch. I called up the local BEST BUY store and the guy said the price is $2848.92 and it is a close-out item.

Thanks in advance,
Kelly

I just can't plop down that kind of dough on a projection TV. My family room has too many windows, making the picture on projection TV's look like poopie. Notice how the lights are always dim around the display models? I think Mitsubishi makes a 43" tube TV, but 36" looks like the max for me for a while
