I didn't see the Sony announcement for their new dual layer DVD burners so I thought I might post it here. Tom's Hardware posted the Sony announcement here. Sony will have two models, an internal IDE and external Firewire/USB2, which will retail for $230 and $330, respectively.

While most users will not buy even the Sony internal model when it first arrives, it will bring the price down for other single-layer 8x models to within reach of users with modest budgets.

This is good news... I have been waiting for the dual layer drives for a while now!

I?m a little confused here. I thought commercial prerecorded DVD?s had a 9.4 GB capacity (equivalent to a dual sided recordable DVD).

These new dual layer recordable DVD?s are supposed to have an 8.5 GB capacity, yet they are claiming it is theoretically possible to copy an entire commercial prerecorded DVD.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me? Are commercial DVD?s actually 8.5 GB?

Well, yes, DVDR-5 technically claims 4.7GB. Unfortunately you can only burn 4.38GB of data on it

Its the same with DVDR-9.

Anyways, well yeah, $5 a disc and you wont see a working drive SAMPLE until July. I've been increasingly cynical about the DVD forums lately; i cant wait to see what other technology they plan to paper launch before then.

Dual sided are 9.4GB. Dual LAYER are 8.5.
Of course, that's base ten marketing B f'n S. In base 2 (what you need to worry about) they're only 7.91GB, the same as commercial DVDs.

I wont be jumping on this band wagon for backing up my movies for another year yet. Of course if you want to use it for data storage that is a different story. The cost of the DVD discs is prohibitive. Current DVD disc prices have only been in a fairly acceptable price range for under a year IMO. They are finally down to $1 each for quality discs. The good thing about these new dual layer discs is that they should help lower prices on the single layar discs faster. Buying 50 packs of DVD+R discs for $10 bucks each (TDK), by this time next year should be the norm. Free after rebate following that .
