Sony announcing first OLED TV in 2007

I like the OLED screen in my Zen Vision W.

But I don't really want an 11" TV.

Technology seems pretty cool though. Very thin, great contrast ratio. By the time a 40"+ version is available for a decent price my 51" rear projection CRT will probably be about dead.

At the CES show, all the reviewers were blown away by the picture quality of the OLED displays there. Now if only they could actually get the damn things to stores.

It provides sharper contrasts and requires no backlighting, which is a HUGE advantage over a traditional LCD

Higher energy efficiency, broader gamut, higher contrast, higher refresh rates, faster response time, more physically durable, higher viewing angles, thinner, lighter, lower ultimate production costs in the future. Basically, it's better in every way except one: shorter life.

Fantastic emerging tech...11" doesn't excite me...when something comes to market that my grandma can see from her lounger across the room, then I'll be impressed.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to the direction of the technology, not this 11? product.

Yeah, I was about to comment on this... so let's make it clear again:

SHORTER LIFE !!!

A perfect arrangement for Sony... buy a TV today, throw it away because it's totsally useless in a couple of years... Brilliant marketing ploy... not to mention that, as I'm willing to bet, the bigger the screen size, the shorter the lifespan of the screen.

Perfect. And the sheep... uhh, I meant "consumers", will flock to buy these devices, because a couple of short-sighted reviewers will tell them how great the picture is.

They didn't make it with throwaway DVDs, but they will make it with throwaway TVs... :disgust:
