I saw this deal too while shopping around for a 3MP camera. Looks like a pretty good no-rebates deal. 128MB will store a good amount of photos and this camera, while not as manual control/feature-laden as the A70 has had great reviews.

I was originally leaning toward the Canon A70, but I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback on the camera forums about its image softness - many are theorizing that it has to do with the complex 5-point autofocus system. One of the main reasons I'm upgrading from my current Samsung 2MP is due explicitly to its image softness and that's the last thing I want to have to deal with again. Reviews of this Sony seem to be very positive and during the course of my forums browsing I came across people who had taken side-by-side comparison shots with this camera and the A70 (both in auto mode, which is what I'd be in 90% of the time) and the DSC-P72 photos looked significantly better IMO. My first concern was having to switch storage formats, but with a free 128MB stick that solves that. My only other concern is that it looks to be a good bit more bulky than the A70 or Nikon 3100 (one of the others I'm considering.) An easily pocketable camera is always nice.

Edit: Unless I'm mistaken, this camera also comes with a 2 2100mAh batteries and a 6-hour charger.

I compared cannon A70 and nikon 3100 at the store before I bought it, and they all have comparable size. P72 is far less bulky than the older model p71. It can also record movie with bigger size 640x640 with sound. It can also use the memory stick pro.

Below is the link for P72 review:

I was going to run some errands later today and thought I'd drop by a store to get a better feel for the size in person. It does look like a great camera though. The photos on Steve's site are actually some of the lowest quality I've seen from it - and they're still not horrible. Everywhere else (like dcresource.com) the photos looked fantastic.

Thanks, just got in on this deal myself. I own a Sony DSC-S70 and a Sony DSC-F707 already, so Memory Stick is obviously not an issue with me. I'll probably Ebay my S70 now. Great post!

I am really worried that I have ordered canon A70 from dell. I have also read lot of reviews about image softness but some were also pretty adamant that there is no issue like that. I can still cancel my order but just wondering if you guys think this sony better than a70 and anyone using a70 finds any problem like softness mentioned. I need some help!

I stopped by Best Buy while I was out earlier. Although they had the A70 and the DSC-P72 at the extreme opposite ends of the display (meaning I had to pull those anti-theft cables to their maximum reach) I was able to get a general feel for the size difference. They are in the same size class although the Sony is slightly bigger - slightly longer and thicker body frame overall although not as thick as the handhold notch portion on the Canon so it's not that big a difference (and it's a little bit shorter than the Canon.) It's a shame the DSC-P72 wasn't quite as small as the P8. That thing was a good 1/2" shorter and probably 1/8-1/4" thinner, but the 72's still not bad and noticeably smaller than the previous generation Sonys.

Given that it's a pretty good deal financially, has no rebates, makes the transition to another storage format financially painless, as well as the fact that I can easily exchange it at OfficeMax should I have any problems with it I'm awfully tempted to pick this up too.

What I immediately like about the Sony is that it accepts regular AA's, comes with two 2100 mAH AA's with overnight charger, a nice plus.

I believe the Canon A70 accepts four regular AA's vs. Sony's 2 AA's.

Unfortunately Sony uses the Memory Stick media where as the Canon uses very cheap and preferred CF media.

The P72 is awesome! Are you guys aware of the movie mode on this thing? It is only limited by the size of your memory stick. I heard that you get about an hours worth of good quality video with a 128 mb memory stick. Also, unlike the Canon, you can zoom while you're taking the video's. I just bought both this camera and the Sony TRV22 minidv digital camcorder, but I'm almost second guessing myself on the video camera now because of this camera. On top of this, this P72 takes great photos and has a feature that I sorely miss on my Olympus C series; a focus assist light for low light situations. I also actually like the size of the P72. It's longer than the Canon or Nikon CP3100, but it's less thick. The Canon A70 and the Nikon both have nice grips, but they make the camera thick.

Important: One question.. I had purchased the P72 from another place (I can still cancel the order before it ships) and want to buy it from Officemax on this deal. With the bundle, do you think I'd have any problems doing a BVG on this camera since Officemax is including the other accessories? Please let me know ASAP! I have to get that other order cancelled.

I was looking for a CF-based camera too, but since they throw in a 128MB stick right off the bat, plus a card reader it pretty much makes that a moot point for me. Plus, I don't know if it's the Memory Stick speed or what, but according to the review at dcresource.com one of the things he talked about was how fast this camera was between photos. I know on most digitals you have to wait several seconds at the very minimum whereas this one was apparently ready for another shot after a little over a second.

I have an Olympus that uses Smart Media cards, so if I went with a Canon or Sony for my smaller snapshot camera, I'd have to buy extra (different kind of media) media anyway. One of the pluses for me is that I'm getting a Sony minidv digital camcorder that uses memory sticks, so it will work with both cameras. I think that if you asked me a couple of years ago if I wanted to get into a camera that uses a memory stick, I'd say no. However, the prices on the Memory Sticks have really come down and are in-line with the other media these days as far as prices. Sony having opened up the market to let third party manufacturer's make the memory stick has probably helped as well.

Parrotheader - That's a plus if this takes shots quickly been photo's, that usual 2-3 second delay between shots really annoys me.

If this were 2.1MP and $200 with the 128MB I'd probably buy it but I think I'll pass.

That was one of the things I was thinking about too. We'll probably be having a baby sometime in the next year or so and seeing how Sony is obviously one of the camcorder kings it might be kind of cool to have same memory standard.

I looked and looked and looked at digital camcorders for the past month and this is why I bought the Sony over the Canon. I've heard that the Canon has a problem picking up motor noise on the onboard mic. Sure I could get an aux mic, but I shouldn't have to. I can still get one anyway, but it's nice to know that I don't have to. Also, the Canon had very poor low light sensitivity. The Sony TRV22 has very good low light sensitivity. One guy on a digital camcorder forum compared the low light sensitivity of the Sony TRV22 to a 3 mp CCD $3K digital camcorder. BTW.. The TRV22 is supposed to have better low light sensitivity than even the TRV33. The 33 uses a higher resolution CCD, but it's smaller and less sensitive to light. Saved me $100.

Being that both cameras use the Sony Memory Stick is a big plus for me.

I just ordered DSCP72 from newegg.com for $309. I would appreciate it if you could
post the link to the $50 off online coupon. I may still be able to cancel my newegg.com order.
Does the Officemax DSCP72 comes with the standard
kit? I did not see the battery charger included.

Thanks,
serena

This is a good price for a GREAT camera! I think I'm gonna go for this one!
I can't find the $50 off coupon anywhere (every hit returns a code that expired 03/23)
Any pointers to where you got the code from??

Sorry.. We can't post coupon codes here. If you enable your private messages though, I'll send you information on where you can find the coupon code.

BTW.. With tax, my camera came to right about $300. Not much cheaper than Newegg, but you get the free memory stick and card reader with the OM deal.

I did so much forum browsing over the last couple days. Here's a link to a thread on Steve's forums from a guy who went out and bought several cameras in this class to first-hand compare for his purchase. He actually opted for the Nikon 3100 over the A70 and P72, but I thought it was fairly relevant nonetheless:

http://www.stevesforums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9385&highlight=dscp72

Since we'll be going to Vegas in a couple months I definitely want one that'll take decent nightshots (by point-and-shoot digital camera standards anyways.) The Sony seems to do very good there according to most reviews.

Thanks Salvador. I enabled my private messaging.
Heh.. No you didn't. Click on profile at the top of the page and on your profile page you'll see "enable private messages". Check the "yes" button and click update profile at the bottom of the page. Sometimes when you click update profile, it hangs, so make sure that you get a screen that says that your settings are being updated now before you back out of it.
