I was originally leaning toward the Canon A70, but I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback on the camera forums about its image softness. One of the main reasons I'm upgrading from my current Samsung 2MP is due explicitly to its image softness and that's the last thing I want to have to deal with again. Reviews of this Sony seem to be very positive and during the course of my forums browsing I came across people who had taken side-by-side comparison shots with this camera and the A70 (both in auto mode, which is what I'd be in 90% of the time) and the DSC-P72 photos looked significantly better IMO. My only concern is that it looks to be a good bit more bulky than the A70 or Nikon 3100. An easily pocketable camera is always nice.
I was looking for a CF-based camera too, but since they throw in a 128MB stick right off the bat, plus a card reader it pretty much makes that a moot point for me. Plus, I don't know if it's the Memory Stick speed or what, but according to the review at dcresource.com one of the things he talked about was how fast this camera was between photos. I know on most digitals you have to wait several seconds at the very minimum whereas this one was apparently ready for another shot after a little over a second.Originally posted by: RossMAN
What I immediately like about the Sony is that it accepts regular AA's, comes with two 2100 mAH AA's with overnight charger, a nice plus.
I believe the Canon A70 accepts four regular AA's vs. Sony's 2 AA's.
Unfortunately Sony uses the Memory Stick media where as the Canon uses very cheap and preferred CF media.
I have an Olympus that uses Smart Media cards, so if I went with a Canon or Sony for my smaller snapshot camera, I'd have to buy extra (different kind of media) media anyway. One of the pluses for me is that I'm getting a Sony minidv digital camcorder that uses memory sticks, so it will work with both cameras. I think that if you asked me a couple of years ago if I wanted to get into a camera that uses a memory stick, I'd say no. However, the prices on the Memory Sticks have really come down and are in-line with the other media these days as far as prices. Sony having opened up the market to let third party manufacturer's make the memory stick has probably helped as well.I was looking for a CF-based camera too, but since they throw in a 128MB stick right off the bat, plus a card reader it pretty much makes that a moot point for me. Ross.. I think you have a enough stuff already. If this were 2.1MP and $200 with the 128MB I'd probably buy it but I think I'll pass.
That was one of the things I was thinking about too. We'll probably be having a baby sometime in the next year or so and seeing how Sony is obviously one of the camcorder kings it might be kind of cool to have same memory standard.Originally posted by: Salvador

I looked and looked and looked at digital camcorders for the past month and this is why I bought the Sony over the Canon. I've heard that the Canon has a problem picking up motor noise on the onboard mic. Sure I could get an aux mic, but I shouldn't have to. I can still get one anyway, but it's nice to know that I don't have to. Also, the Canon had very poor low light sensitivity. The Sony TRV22 has very good low light sensitivity. One guy on a digital camcorder forum compared the low light sensitivity of the Sony TRV22 to a 3 mp CCD $3K digital camcorder. BTW.. The TRV22 is supposed to have better low light sensitivity than even the TRV33. The 33 uses a higher resolution CCD, but it's smaller and less sensitive to light. Saved me $100.That was one of the things I was thinking about too. We'll probably be having a baby sometime in the next year or so and seeing how Sony is obviously one of the camcorder kings it might be kind of cool to have same memory standard.
