I've called 3 OM stores and only one has some in stock, but they won't honor the online coupon will they?

I've printed my order confirmation from OM online, and hopefully the store is nice enough to match the $50 online coupon... sigh...

Anybody know if I'll have any trouble doing a BVG on this camera since Officemax is bundling the memory stick and reader with the camera?

TIA,

Sal

It's possible, I've done it before with a Canon PowerShot A40 last summer. First you need to keep calling until you find an OM B&M which has this digicam in stock, then somehow get them to committ over the phone that it's ok to use your OM.com $50 off coupon in the store, if they say yes write down their name and drive to the store ASAP, when you get there ask for that person specifically. YMMV but it can and has worked before.

OM online will also pricematch internet stores... so if anyone can find a cheaper price (with overnight shipping added), please post.

I guess just be nice to the manager...
I am planning on doing the same thing too after work.
Only 1 out of 3 stores has it in stock.

Read my post dated 04/28/2003 10:05 AM, basically call them first, confirm they have it in stock, be VERY NICE, get them to say yes, then go there immediately.

It has and CAN work but it's tricky.

I understand this, but my question is what do I take to verify that I have the coupon. The ones @chubbywallet aren't code #'s, they are just link-throughs. What can I take to verify that a $50 coupon exists. Most of the time @my OfficeMax they are completely unaware of coupons. Man THAT BLOWS that the deal is now B&M only-------

Thanks Rossman

WOW! That disappeared from their web site awful fast. I hesitate for a few hours and POOF, gone.

Oh well. Hopefully it'll be back up sometime soon. At the very least it'll give me time to do a little more research before the next deal comes along. Maybe the next one will cover the DSC-P8.

Not only have they taken it off the site, they've wiped it completely off the banner ad for their 'Free Accessories' promotion that was displaying at the top of the Digital Cameras section page. If you clicked that link it would take you to a promotion page showing 6 cameras for which the special was running. As of an hour or so ago the DSC-72 was still on there. Now that graphic has been re-Photoshopped with some cheapo $10 camera tossed in there just to keep the image balanced out I'm assuming. So I guess there's little hope of this one coming back now. Congrats to those of you who got this and didn't think about it on your lunch break.

Ah I see. What I do is call first, check to see if they have it in stock, if YES then I get creative as to why I can't use the coupon online, they usually say yes you can use it in the store, I stress that it's a .com coupon, before going to the OM B&M I do a SCREEN PRINT of my cart showing the $50 off coupon which usually suffices.

Nah, it didn't work out for me..
I went to the store that has the camera on stock, asked the manager if he would give me the $50 off, he said, no, sorry, it will be like taking $50 off of my wallet...

Still keeping my online print out with my $50 off coupon though, just in case anybody has another idea....

That's why I always suggest calling first, get them to commit over the phone that YES they'll accept your coupon then go there.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I wonder if this deal is going sour.

First of all, OfficeMax completely took the SKU for the DSC-P72 bundle offline. By itself, not a big deal...but read on. Bad sign #1.

Then I noticed that they removed the regular DSC-P72 from their database as well. Things start to seem strange. Bad sign #2.

Finally I called OfficeMax.com when I noticed my confirmation page said the camera was backordered. The lady there told me they will try to fill it for up to 7 days and then -poof- cancel my order. Bad sign #3.

I asked her if I could just stop by my local store for pick-up, since they actually have one in stock...she said no way, they won't do that...although you can make returns to a local store, which makes no sense to me then why you can't do a local pick-up.

Anyway, I sure hope this goes through. I'm gonna be pissed if they wait a week and then cancel on me.

I guess it just wasn't meant to be or you snooze, you lose.

I'll just have to hold out for a $250 deal on the Canon A70, my dream digicam.

Why is that your dream camera?

Sal

It's the 3MP improved version of the A40, an all around excellent digicam.

But then I gotta RTFM to learn how to operate it.

That's kind of why I was liking it so much at first too, but then I realized I'm pretty much a caveman when it comes to photography.

"Look! Pretty rock! Me take picture. *Click* . . . . . . . . Was the flash on??"

So while it'd be nice to have all those features in addition to the point-and-shoot options on the A70 I'm kind of skeptical as to whether or not I'd personally use them. Throw in the supposed 'softness' issue a lot of people seem to be having with the A70 and I'm definitely willing to look at other brands again. Pocketability, picture sharpness, and hopefully using AA batteries are my main criteria. This one fit all of those (as well as a few other cameras out there.) This one just happened to be a great deal and made the transition to another memory format financially painless.

To the guy who says the A70 is his dream camera:

I bought the A40 for my parents. It takes great pictures. So good I almost bought one myself, even though I already have a Sony S70 (3.3mp) and a Sony F-707 (5mp). I also recommended the A40 to a friend who is extremely happy with it.

While the A70 seems like it would be the "big brother" of the A40, there's just something about it that isn't "quite right" to me. I won't go into a lot of detail, but do your research first. I did and that's why I bought the P72 instead.

I'll probably Ebay my Sony S70. My wife cried (literally) when I broke the news to her, until I told her I bought another Sony to replace it.

Strangely enough, my four year old S70 is still worth about $250 and I've got extras to toss in, so this works out to be an even trade for me. Assuming OfficeMax doesn't screw me out of this deal!

Congrats on getting in on the deal. I hope it works out for you and hope that maybe they'll revive it again (although I'm not holding out hope on the latter.)

One thing I saw recommended at another forum was to take your own CF card(s) into the store with you to test a camera out before you buy (of course you'd only be able to test CF-based cameras, but you get the drift.) That way you can take pictures of the exact same thing and compare the default quality not only on screen, but on printouts - assuming they let you do it. I might try that this week with the Canon A70 and the Nikon 3100 since those two (along with this Sony) are the ones I'm leaning to the most as of right now. Perhaps the image softness issue with the Canon might not be that bad on a printout or could be easily corrected by running a light unsharpen mask on all your pictures via a batch file. That would be a minor inconvenience, but once you found an average unsharpen mask level that you could use on all images it wouldn't take long at all as you'd only have to run it once per every time you download images to your computer.

Parrothead:

I noticed you are concerned about the size. In my opinion the P72 is about the same volume and weight as the A70, but the oblong shape makes it easier to slip in a pocket. I also think the P8 may be a little too small for comfort, at least for me. And I heard the all-metal case scratches easily. But all three cameras are in the same league, IMHO.

Has anyone gotten their camera or a confirmation from OfficeMax on this deal? Mine is still showing backorder, and they say they will cancel it after 7 days. Today only I can get a Sony P8 or a Canon A70 at Dell for $90 off...this is very frustrating not to know if this OfficeMax deal will go through!
