Sony discontinuing Sixaxxis

I got my DualShock 3 controller from Sony today. The new controller, which goes on sale in North America this week, will make my Sony games start rumbling ASAP.

But unboxing my DualShock 3 made me wonder about my PS3?s Sixaxis controllers. Are they the old hotness?

A Sony rep tells me that the Sixaxis is indeed on the way out: ?Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it?s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).?

The original rumble-free motion-controller won?t make it out of 2008. So seeya, Sixaxis. Hello, motion-sensitive, rumbling Dualshock 3.

<insert shock pun here>

What was the point in introducing it in the first place, then? Couldn't they just incorporate it into the new DS3 controller? Or did they realize that the technology had no appeal?

The DS3 has the motion-sensing features of the Sixaxxis. It just adds the force-feedback/shock as well.

it IS incorporated in the DS3... so a standalone SixAxis is utterly pointless.
My DS3 I imported in November boldly states "DualShock 3", and directly below "SixAxis", instead of only SixAxis as a name.

And some elements of the SixAxis are actually greatly used. I still really enjoy Lair, even though it was critically panned because of the SixAxis only controls... I don't find them terribly difficult and offer a nice rewarding gameplay if you can master the controls. I don't think motion sensing needs to be as gimmicky and 'easy' as it is with the Wii... and yes, most of the sixaxis usage thus far has been extremely gimmicky, but it has real potential, mostly only in flight games I reckon, although in Warhawk I stick to analog flight, it's even harder in that game because of the speed.

i just wish they would replace the sixaxis for free that came w/my ps3 that drops out randomly for a few seconds at a time.

it's annoying when it happens and it's happened during hot shots golf after i inputed my power but before i could set the impact, which in turn made me skull the shit out of the ball.

I was confused after I read the Wiki article about the DualShock 3 personally. It said that it would encorporate DualShock 2 rumble with wireless features of the SIXAXIS. Good to know they aren't dropping the motion completely (for people who like it)

I thought the SixAxis motion sensing was implemented perfectly in Heavenly Sword.

i actually dont mind the sixaxxis controller and hope for a major price drop so i can get a couple more cheaper. they had dualshock with the ps/ps2 right? but they couldnt incorporate it with the ps3 on launch because of a patent infringement correct? guess thats why i dont mind the sixaxxis as much if thats true because the last console i owned before getting a wii and ps3 was an n64.

Heavenly Sword is another great title just uses it just right, and aren't forced to use it nor is it used all the time. That typically isn't the case, with motion controls, while presented for use in situations that they would feel just right in... sometimes feels like merely a gimmick to say, hey look! we are using the SixAxis!!! Uncharted bordered on this, but did it right in the end... used rarely, basically only when crossing logs. I don't think I've come across another point where it was used (only about halfway through the game, I rarely finish games! lol). Resistance did it right too, by using it to shake off enemies that attached to you.
Balance and shaking seem like perfect uses, and in the end are a nice incorporation of the feature that gets you more involved in the gameplay.

Yeah, I thought they did a good job with it, especially when you had to launch the boulders and hit the targets. The arrows and hats moved too fast for me to effectively use the SixAxis controls.

This is obviously no big surprise... Controllers without rumble are so two generations ago.

You know what is sad, I didn't even know about the SixAxis motion implementation until I got to the arrows part at the castle. Needless to say, hitting those targets previously with the boulders was pretty tough for me.

i hate that shit too...you have no idea how many times i've fallen/driven off a cliff in warhawk cause of that.

I thought they originally left it out for patent reasons? On a side note another game I thought used the motion controls well was folklore, but I only played the demo.

yeah it was good in folklore...like others said, i guess its how well implemented in the game it is so that it comes naturally and intuitively rather than forcing it onto the player that makes it work.

Once DS3 comes out, no one is going to want to buy a Sixaxis controller... so maybe they'll just sell them with the 40 GBs until they run out?

DS3 is heavier, but not that much heavier. It feels "solid" to me. The 360 controller (with AA batteries) is still a lot heavier.

(I have an imported DS3)

because sony lost their patent case with immersion over force feedback. And introduced a motion sensing controller minus the feedback.

Microsoft paid up. Sony refused. Then they started their whole rumble is so last gen spin. I guess till recently. I can't remember what their spin was when they introduced the dualshock 3

I believe there was also some spin about rumble not working with motion sensing... to which Nintendo said "nuh uh!"

does it still look exactly the same?

obviously this isn't meant to start a flame war, but the 360 controller is still hands down the best one i've used

It looks identical except for the Words Dualshock 3 added. I'm guessing slightly larger and obviously slightly heavier to accomdate for force feedback parts.
