F818 is not much of an improvement over F717, unless you need to use CompactFlash, although that's way, way too much money to pay for a CF slot It still uses a tiny 2/3inch sensor, so the extra 3 megapixels will generate extra noise and nothing else. An excellent example of a product developed by the marketing department.
I have F717 - nice camera, although kinda bulky. No way in hell I'm gonna upgrade to F818, if I'm to spend this kind of money then Canon EOS series is definitely the way to go.
Give me a break! I own a 717 and yes, it's a great camera but "not much of an improvement?"...
It takes CF, MS AND Microdrive!
5.24mp compared to 8mp??
RAW mode!
a 28 -200mm lens made by zeiss in germany, not a licensed lens like the 717's
640 x 480 movie mode!
oh, lest I forget...
7x optical zoom!
You can't see the difference? Way more than $200 of upgrades here!
Crack kills, it just starts by making you dumb first. Quit smoking it!
For those of you who are thinking EOS line - you get no LCD preview, so unless your really a pro that's a huge feature to pay extra money for!
The Rebel is $899, buy another lens for it, go ahead, tell me how much you paid for more glass??
the f828 gets serious consideration from me when it hits! You may want to check ebay that week for my 717...

You're the one smoking crack. No LCD preview? That's HALF the point of a DSLR. Optical viewfinders are way more accurate than LCD viewfinders. You can tell if something is in focus much more easily, it doesn't eat up batteries like crazy, and the speed of DSLRs is much higher than PNS cameras. Licensed lens? The lens is just as German as the 717 lens, its just a *T designation, meaning there is an anti-glare coating on the lens..that's it. If you don't understand the importance of an optical TTL viewfinder, then you don't understand the principles of photography at all. If you put a price on lenses, then you are in the wrong hobby/field my friend. Most photographers with SLRs will spend way more on lenses than on the camera body alone, which is quite normal. Remember the ability to change lenses is also a big advantage, you can't ever change the lense on the 717 or 828. While the lenses on them are decent, they're anything but spectacular. Look at the chromatic abberration and barrel distortion they cause... something that you won't get NEARLY as much from a DSLR. With less noise on the Digital rebel, and the fact that you can get the camera with a 18-55mm lens for $999 retail, same as the F828, it would be a much better camera for the money. The extra 3 megapixels won't give the sony any advantage over the less noisy digital rebel. Battery life is going to be about 350-450 shots on the F828, and 500 to over 600 shots on the Digital Rebel. You can change the lenses, among the many many (over 50) lenses from Canon (including the awesome L series), where as you can only add on lenses to the F828 (they cost $299). Adding lenses causes distortion and reduces image quality, changing them doesn't worsen image quality. You can use an external flash with TTL metering on the canon, on the sony you can too, but they only offer one flash that will do that. You will never get any glare with the optical viewfinder on the rebel, and fast motion is no problem, since there is no slow lcd to have to watch. The sony only has electronic viewfinders, which are no where near as fast, and the screen blacks out for a second after you take a picture, on the rebel you can take another picture immediately because it only blanks out for a split second, and you're ready to shoot again. The sony only has 8 megapixels going for it, that's it. Its pictures are noisy, distortion and chromatic aberration are horrible, and it really isn't that much of an improvement over the 717 as far as picture quality is concerned. Even the DiMage A1 was rated higher than the Sony..its only 5mp too. I can't wait for dpreview.com to rip the sony a new ahole for bringing so much hype, and delivering so little in terms of quality over other cameras.
