I have the DRU-500A and I can do 4X writting. It was just a firmware upgrade.
Great writter for those that are chicken like me to commit to one format.

One word of note. The DVD ripping speed is very slow on this drive.
So I kept my Pioneer DVD-ROM in my computer for this.

Also I have heard from a reliable source that it doesn't like black cd-r's.

Great drive, I have the external version of this drive and its been able to burn every kindof media that I've thrown at it!

Haven't tried DVD ripping with it, but it was supposedly improved with the new firmware.

The AX just means it already has the newest firmware.

i had this drive for over a month and no coaster yet. Ritek G03 is best bang for the buck. it burns at 2x. avoid all other cheap brand.

I get my Ritek discs at www.rima.com Unfortunetly they are in California so most likely will have tax.
They don't offer free shipping, but even with shipping they are competative and more importantly
they are reputable, unlike many other online vendors that sell media.

I cancelled my staples dru500a and instead payed $26 more ($350 instead of $323) from jandr.com (free shipping, no tax). I'd rather have the newer dru500ax with 8MB eeprom (both have 8MB buffer but 500a only has 2MB eeprom) plus 500ax has a newer stabalization, etc.
officedepot and staples both are liquidating the 500a and jandr has the newer 500ax.

Staples is not liquidating this drive, Staples have never carried the Sony Dual DVD±RW Writer until last week, so they are not selling something that has been sitting in their warehouse for several months and as someone in this thread pointed out the only different beteewn the DRU-500A and the DRU-500AX is a firmware update.
It looks like you out smarted yourself and paid $23 to much. Also if you had received and installed the drive from Staples you could have still returned the drive to Staples if it wasn't what you wanted.

This is a combo drive with +-RW. I believe the other drive was just a -r, rw

You missed the point, he's not getting a better drive, he's getting the same drive as the one he ordered from staples. someone who has been shipped the Sony Dual DVD±RW Writer from Staples say he received the DRU-500AX version (firmware 2.0c) not the DRU-500A version that is being shown on the Staples web site.

ok based on that info..I'm called my wife just now and told her to accept the package. I previously told her to refuse it. Perhaps if I don't get the 500ax from staples then I may return it. If I do get 500ax then I'll call and cancel my jandr order I placed last night. I was just basing my decision on what the lady from staples told me on the phone that is was a 500a not 500ax.
