Seeing as the cheapest that I saw for the DRU-500, or this drive, at Pricewatch was $320+, this seems like a fairly good deal. Not sure what the refurb might be missing, but hopefully includes the software.

Got this drive rebadged as a Ikebana retail kit about a couple of weeks back from outpost.com for about the same price after rebate. Flashed it to sony's dru 500a 2.0e f/w without a hiccup. All that I can say is that I'm very pleased with the performance of the drive.

Need, no, want, yes. What I use is "-R" and "+RW". The "-R" is by far the cheapest media, and that counts for a lot when you are using up to 100 a month. On the other hand, when you are experimenting and don't want to have to throw away discs, the rewriteable feature is very nice. And "+RW" are much better than "-RW". At present, the only way to get "-R" and "+RW" is with this Sony drive.

jump on this people , I have the previous sony drive, the 500a and it is very nice.

I thought I saw an "Ikebana" or somesuch that does all the formats-

The Outpost Ikebana is a rebadged Sony I flashed my bios as well and have been burning happily away ever since...

Everybody is chasing these Sony drives like they are the holy grail, but I personally could not be more happy with my $150 after rebate Cendyne/Pioneer 105 4X DVD-RW drive. Even PC Magazine aknowledged that these Pioneer drives are the editors choice because they are solid, reliable and cheaper than the Sony drives. Even if I bought a Sony drive, I bet 99% of my DVD purchases would still be DVD-R disks that I already use in my Pioneer. I would rather have two Pioneer drives for around the same cost as one Sony drive.

Agree....also, think of your current burner....do you really use CDRW disks that much? Probably not becaus the CDR media is so cheap. The same will be true with DVD media when new and "better' formats come out.

just waiting on the lite-on's. they are also going to be dual format and will cost in the range of $150-200. they were supposed to ship this month, but it got delayed, but that means theyre coming very soon, so i dont mind waiting a little bit for it.
