If you don't get a good seal they'll sound thin, but if the seal is good the bass is on the heavy side of things. Also the highs can be harsh, but it's good if they're $15.

Wow, you're not the only person that I've heard this from(about the wire casing), incidently it seems to only happen to the white wires when production moved to another plant. Oh well, like you said, at this price its still in.

I've used a pair with black wires since November 04 and they're still in great shape! The bass is more than adequate for me--I wonder if the people who complain about lack of bass have suffered hearing loss?

I had the blacks, and the wires still got all screwed up. It made me so mad, because these headphones ROCK in all other respects. After 4-5 months the right earbud became unusable because the rubber sleeve had disintegrated to the point that the wires were exposed. I tried to get Sony to replace them, but they were firm on the 3 month warranty.

Same story here. I own a pair of 51s, two 71s, and a pair of 81s. The wiring on the 81s just melted away and it was only a week after the 3 month warranty expired. You figure they'd do something about it with so many complaints.

Great earbuds if you like bass though the mids and highs on these are that great. The only problems I have is that the covering for the wires break and tear very easily, more than the EX51 black ones I had. Also, I've had 1 EX51 and 1 EX71 black lose sound in one earbud, I'm on my 3rd pair.
