Sony G Series Monitors - Where?

Well after six months of trying to get the right 19"er and after 1 return (Hitachi 769 - hated the bulging tube), I have decided on the Sony G400 Flatscreen 19"er. The KDS model was tempting and much cheaper, but it sure was hot on top and I didn't care for the controls. So now I decide on a Sony and just my luck, everyone seems to be OUT OF STOCK and backordered on the G series, even the 21"er G500. Tried Onvia, Outpost, NECX, Computers4sure, and a few other reliable vendors - all out of stock. Either they are so popular, dealers can't keep them in stock or Sony's got some serious production problems. Anyone here frustrated in trying to get a G400?

Failing to get one, I might opt for the Viewsonic PF795 19"er which is slightly better than the PF790. Anyone using this monitor and are you happy with it?

Damn, several people in this forum have mentioned that the KDS AV-195TF runs hot. I was going to get one to replace the Sony G400 that I'm returning for spot convergence problems and shipping damage, since the G400 is out of stock at Onvia.

I would recommend getting the G400 from a vendor with a good return policy because the monitors are poorly packed, so the potential for shipping might be higher than with other monitors. The G400 comes in a pretty small box for a 19", which leaves little room for foam packing. The Samsung 900NF I had was packed far better; even UPS would have some difficulty damaging those.

I'd like to hear about the PF795 also; I've stayed away from Viewsonics because I've heard their text clarity isn't great. In fact the text clarity of my G400 isn't that great; another reason I'm looking at another brand.

I bought two sony monitors from Onsale. Good service & price.
Have you checked over there??

Make sure you go to the shop, not the auction site.

orlin is right on about the packing on the cpg-g400. UPS damaged three in shipping, the fourth came via Fedexe 2day. The foam packing Sony provides is really poor and very thin and breaks up easy. I wpuld buy from Onvia since their service was very good on this issue and kept sending out replacements untill I got a good one.

Yeeks, wow i am glad i read this thread!! I was planning on buying the Sony monitor too from Onvia, so it's good to hear that they ship replacements out to me. Man this makes me wonder if i should just give up and pay taxes so that i can get it at a local retalier, hahahaha.

Yeah they are out of stock EVERYWHERE that has a decent price. I mean the only places that have them in stock also sell them for like $625 or something, haha insane.

I was thinking about getting a Samsung 900NF but i have heard that it has a weird buzzing sound that is annoying, and also that you have to wait 30 minutes before changing any of your on board monitor settings cuz the monitor has to " warm up ". Plus it's heavy and has a big footprint, but it is quite tempting too since there is a $30 rebate plus it is IN STOCK! haha.

AS for the Viesonic pf795, i am also intrested in hearing some opnions. It's CURRENTLY IN STOCK at onvia so it is quite tempting. It's light and also has a smaller footprint, but i am also worried about the clairty of the text. I have heard that it can get fuzzy or blurry if u punch it up to the max or near the max, such as at 1600x1200.

EDIT: The above opnion i heard of for the viewsonic monitor was based on the PF790, not the PF795. I haven't heard anything bad specifically on this specific model.

Also on a side note, MonitorOutlet is pretty expensive. I haven't checked them out recently, but i think i checked them out back when i wanted to get a 17" mointor...and they were really pricey.

To all considering the Viewsonic PF795. I just purchased one two weeks ago for about $510.00 shipped. I have to say that I am very impressed with it. The flat screen is unbelievable. I had no problems with geometry or anything. There are of course the two horizontal lines running across the screen, but you will see those on any AG screen. I run mine at 1600X1200 with refresh at 85 MHz and it is beautiful. Colors are brilliant and the text is very clear for an aperature grill. I am very happy with it. Clarity improves even more if you take advantage of the BNC connecters. I would definately reccomend this monitor.

Keep in mind, everyone sees monitors differently, so I suggest viewing it first. I haven't found any reviews or comments on this monitor yet so I took a chance, and I am more than pleased. It is a great monitor.

Onvia is saying they expect more shipments of Sony G400's in mid to late July. By then the free shipping deal will probably be over and after reading that Sony packs them rather flimsy and people receiving so many damaged units, I am more inclined to opt for the Viewsonic PF795 now. Besides it has BNC imputs where the Sony doesn't. As far as the Samsung 900NF, it's footprint is huge for a 19"er and some have complained of poor color rendition of blacks. It does have a focus control which is a rarity these days and optional USB. Too bad it's 19.4" deep. That's one bulky monitor, but the price is nice.

Based on what Nater21 said, it appears the PF795 is a decent model by Viewsonic and the BNC connectors should improve the image slighty.

The only other Sony FS based 19" trinitron monitor available now I've heard that has a real good image is the HP P910, but it's even more $$$ than the G400 at 650.00 or so which makes it a poor bargain and like the G400 - NO USB or BNC connectors.

If cost were no concern, I'd get a Sony F400, but it's way overpriced at 900.00+ and besides, it appears Sony has discontinued their 19" flagship model as no one has them in stock.

So I am leaning heavily toward the Viewsonic PF795 at 500.00 as it seems the best all-around 19"er for 500.00. Too bad no dealer here has one on display to look at before buying one, but isn't that usually the case when your looking for a monitor.

There is a difference between the Viewsonic and G400. The Viewsonic does not use FD trinitron, and FD is more flat than previous trinitron and has a lower dp. Also, the G400 has dual video inputs, which makes it nice if you have two computers.

KDS VS-195TF also uses the same FD Trinitron as the G400

Well, I went through a similar monitor-buying period about 1 month ago. All I can say is that I saw a clear difference between the Viewsonic PF790 and the Sony E-400. I ended up paying about $100 more for the Sony, but it is definitely worth it...

The Sony Cpg g400 is beter in Text and deeper and richer color display from comparing them in Worst buy last time in was in LA. I would consider the KDS AV-195TF. It uses the same Trinitron tube as the Sony g400 and runs about 400$ on the net but there is some quality control issues that have to dealt with if you buy one. The picture quality looks as good as my g400. If your on a budget go for the Kds, if you want to go first class, get the "Sony a True winner" I have never regretted my g400 purchase even with the shipping hassle I went through to get a good one.

Well i am afraid that if i keep having them shipped from Onvia, they won'y have enough stock to go around to fill everyone's backorder plus also keep shipping mine. So i am afraid when i ask them to ship me another replacement...they'll say...." sorry we are out of stock again." haha

I was wondering since the Sony G400's are out of stock, I noticed that the DELL P991 19" monitor is 559.00. It uses the same tube as the G400 and KDS. Dell now offers a 3yr extended warranty for this monitor at no extra charge through Gigabyte.

http://gigabuys.us.dell.com/store/prodspec.asp?CategoryID=207&sku=320-6607

PC World rated this monitor excellent at text and very good at graphics but rated it 4th overall because of cost.

Anyone using the P991? Would like feedback on this 19"er.

A relative of mine owns the Dell P991.
Its is Sony perfect. Best I've seen.
Will take some time adjusting to FLAT screen though
I keep looking in the corners and edges of the screen for
fuzzies or imperfections. There aren't any.
