Alright , sorry for flooding the board with all these monitor questions and opinions, but here are the last two finalist.

Model:
SONY CPD-G520CRT : price : 687.96 (After Shipping) Cons: Smaller viewable screen than Samsung and the color is a horrid gray case.
Pros: higher Horizontal Scan Range than Samsung and seems to have higher recommended resz at 85hz. And its a Trinitron monitor.

21" (19.8" viewable image size)

Aperture Grille Pitch:
0.24mm

Screen Treatment:
Conductive, Anti-Reflective Coating

Horizontal Scan Range:
30kHz - 130kHz

Vertical Scan Range:
48Hz - 170Hz

Maximum Resolution:
2048 x 1536

Recommended Resolution:
1880 x 1440 @ 85Hz

SAMSUNG SyncMaster 1200NF

price :701$

cons: less Horizontal Scan Range 30-121hz and I can not find what the highest resz at 85hz is so I think the Sony beats it in recommended resz at 85hz.

pros: larger viewable screen at 20" , nice on-screen display. And it is the normal white of computer components not the horrid SONY gray. People seem to think the Sammy is better for some reason.

22" Flat Aperture Grille (20º viewable)
2048x1536@75Hz Maximum Resolution
1600x1200 @85Hz Optimum Resolution

What do you all think??

Sony. And I can't believe you are counting viewable image as a con. Do you really think you'll be able to tell the difference between .(point)2 inches? Two tenths of an inch will not be noticable.

I count small default viewable area as a con.

Why do some manufacturers default the viewable area so small? It is a known fact that focus and convergence will fall off in the corners and around the edges of the display. By defaulting to a small viewable size some of these artifacts are hidden in the black boarder. I guess they are betting that most people will not use the controls to stretch the image out to full size. When I evaluate monitors side by side the first thing I do is set the viewable size the same on both in order to make certain I?m comparing apples to apples. After all if I?m going to spend money on a large screen monitor I want to use all the real-estate I can.

both are excellent monitors for the money

personally i would have bought the 1200nf becuase it does have BNC outputs.

but i got the g520 for a really good deal. also the grey exterior is not that bad. i like it a lot actally.

DoOLie11 do you notice a difference in screen size? The sony stats it is a 19.8 and the samsung 20. can you tell the difference.

Border edge( made up term ) : the ammount of fuzzy/blurryness around the outside edge. Sharp in the center but blurred on the edges. How sharp are both of them on the outer edge? Which is better? Sony for 685 and Samsung for 701, what would you get?

Thanks so much.

ps I know there is a correct term for border edge

hey eno

both have excellent border edges, there inst much detoriation on either, both extremely sharp,

i think i would have to go for the samsun for the extra moeny becase of the bnc ouput, but there isnt much difference between the total viewable.

I'm happy with my 900NF so my vote is obvious but you can't really go wrong with both.

If you get a good one (free of defects or shipping damage), you'll be pleased with either. I would say go with the Samsung because Sony's customer support blows at best. If you have a problem with your monitor a day after you get it, Sony will request that you have it shipped to them for repair or you'll have to drive it somewhere for repairs.

I've had it up to here with lousy customer support and because Sony's sucks, I will not be buying any more Sony products.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I am pretty sure I will get the samsung when I get home tonight. Only thing is the Sammy is a 121hz and the sony is a 130hz. That is the main thing, I wanted to get best resz/refresh for the money.

Also I heard through the grapevine that Samsung NF line are Trinitron tubes??/ Is that true?

Any of you with the Samsung 1200nf , what are all the refresh rates? There website only gives to recommeded and max resolution and refresh. What is in between??? The Sony states that it is recommeded at 1880/1600/1280 at 85hz , the samsung only states recommended at 1600 at 85hz?? Can it go to 1880 at 85hz???

DoOlie11, thanks for your help, and out of the 2 which apeture lines are more noticeable in white backround programs. So you would say the Sammy right. Thanks alot

Thanks again !!! You fellas are a great help

Heh.. I don't think you'll see a difference between 121 hz and 130 hz. Anything over 100 is great. Anything over 85 hz is great! BTW.. What resolution are these monitors capable of this refresh rate?

You will not see the lines after a week. I was so anal about that when I got my first FD Trinitron/Diamondtron tubed monitor. I was so afraid that the lines would bug me, but they don't at all. Maybe because I know that they are supposed to be there?

The Diamondtron is based off of the Sony Trinitron tube. It's Mitsubishi/NEC's version of the Trinitron. Some actually prefer it to the Trinitron, but I actually don't think there is much of a difference. You will probably find more of a difference between monitors of the same brand and model than between other branded monitors with the same tube design. Honest! You wouldn't believe the QC of monitors these days. Make sure and check your monitor out well for defects like geometry, fuzzy text, discolorations on a white background. Those are some of the common problems that I was getting. If you can, buy from a local store and have them pull out the exact monitor that you want to buy. If you are shipping, make sure that the place you are getting it from has a great return/exchange policy. Make sure that they will pick up return shipping if you have to exchange the monitor because of defects or shipping damage.

I run my 21" at 1600 x 1200 at 85 hz and it's great! I can't see anyone running it at a higher resolution unless they either sit with their nose pressed against the glass or they aren't dealing with text at all. IMO.. Anything over 85 hz refresh rate is great, so I wouldn't be splitting hairs here.

Isn't the 121 and 130 the horizontal range in kHz? This would make a difference in the capabilities of the max rez/refresh rates. Still, I think either one of these monitors is a winner.

Well I already ordered my 19" (samsung 955df) for the other comp and am having to wait for the main monitor. Every dealer and I mean every dealer does not have the samsung 1200nf in stock. But just about all of them have the Sony g520 , so unless they recieve some in tomarrow I will just go with the Sony G520.

DoOlie how much did you pay for your G520? Think I should wait a couple weeks for the Sammy or quit my bitchn and just buy the Sony?

Bet CounterStrike will look great at 1600x1200,99fps and 85hz.

What reasons do you think all retailers could be out? One retailer, I believe it was ecost said that one of there distributors are not carrying the 1200nf anymore. Wonder if they are cancelling the 1200nf? Is the 1200 a old model?

This is just a follow up post to one from over a week ago to all that even care.

Well i recieved the Samsung today(955df) and I looks great but I can not get the bottom of the screen to be straight. There is no setting to straighten out the bottom taskbar, in games it doesn't really matter but I won't be gaming to much with this one. Is there any settings I can change that will help the rounded bottom of screen. So far it looks like all the settings are for the sides not the roundness of top or bottom.

I should be recieving the Sony any time now.
