Well are there any better noise cancelling headphones than the Bose ones? If there are then I would probably buy those otherwise I am seriously considering buying the Bose ones.

Guys,

Check the Koss plug earphones or the Radioshack (rebadged Koss) ones. For $25.00. they do the trick very well.
Compare better than Sony and even better than Bose. Great isolation in planes (active nc is not any better) and quite good sound quality. They indeed shut you off if you have a decent cd or mp3 player. Try it.

Koss plus have no active nc. Just good old passive isolation (they are plugs) and great sound. No active nc phone can help without putting some music on. And if you do play some music, the sound isolation from the Koss one can be surpassed in sound quality (not isolation) only by the etymotic ones (for much more $$$$$$$). Otherwise, this are the ones. After too much research and try ons......for sound isolation in planes (active and passive nc heaphones) Koss plugs ended up being THE best and surprisingly the cheapest solution too. I hope I have helped some other souls with this too.

Koss plugs have no active nc. Just good old passive isolation (they are good comfy plugs) and great sound. No active nc phone can help without putting some music on. Otherwise they have the dreaded his. And if you do play some music, the sound quality from the Koss ones can be surpassed (not isolation) only by the etymotic ones (for much more $$$$$$$). Otherwise, this are the ones. Forget Bose, Sony, Aiwa, Senss etc....After too much research and try ons......for sound isolation in planes (active and passive nc heaphones) Koss plugs ended up being THE best and surprisingly the cheapest solution too with only passive isolation. The only better solution is Etymotic that (while providing the same isolation) will give you super audiopfile quality for around $300.00. Koss audio quality is simply excellent for me (and yes, I am quite fussy about audio quality). I hope I have helped some other souls with this thing.

i had these speakers for 15 days they are pretty cool but i opted to return them because the noise cancelling feature was not what i expected basically the fact that it is a ear plug cancels out most of the noise and the actual electronic operation does not do much. They work very well but i was dissapointed by the bass production, i guess my expectations were too high for these two little buds 60$ each when i bought and returned them good thing i did lol

Nutcase99, please don't buy the Bose NC headphones.
My friend brought over his pair for me to try, they are really not worth the price.
You can get a pair of closed phones like Sennheiser hd280 that can do similar job.
I find the hd280 better not just because of the sound quality, but without the hissing noise from the NC.

I agree that some passive noise cancelling headphones work good. However, what I do not agree is that active noise canceling does work w/o music.

What active canceling does is to pick up the noise, send out signal at reverse frequency, and neutralize the noise. So, regardless of having music or not, it does reduce the noise level.

Anyway, if you get closed headphones which shield your ears, they will of course shut off the noise. However, you need enough insulation to do that, and you will be carrying around the weight.
