To clarify, essentially what a USB to analog cable does is just about what your soundcard does. Save yourself the extra money and just buy a $2 audio cable. If you're concerned about quality, I suggest you either buy a soundcard with optical output OR buy a USB to optical converter. The USB to analog really is just a gimmick...

As for the Sony MZR70, it still has the fat battery hump on the back. That makes it both unwieldy and larger than most other MD recorders on the market. If you're going to go for yesterday's technology, at least get the MZ-R90 for $180 and buy a decent quality cable to connect with your PC.

You can record any sound/music from just about any source using a MD recorder. Just realize that whatever the original format, the recorder converts it to MD compression before storing it onto the MD. In most cases, the compression is ATRAC. Therefore, all the lame USB ----> analog cables are useless unless you don't have a soundcard. Optical on the other hand is much better because you don't have to worry about distortion since levels are automatically adjusted.

Ugh! I'm wasting too much time on this thread. Time to do something worthwhile today...

the player only fits well for ppl like me who have a rec/player that is quite bulky, sharp MT15 here. This would be PERFECT. I'd buy a thin player/recorder, but that costs a lot more money i don't have (hell, this costs more money that i have ). My sharp cost me $85 (got it from someone here), add the $100 for this, and it's a pretty nice deal MD wise.

Ideally, i'd just have a deck that had keyboard input, and the smallest player i could find, i don't need recording on the road or whatever. it's all about personal pref. Then again, the issue of money (ie, SCHOOL) falls into play

I bought a Sony MZ-R55 christmas '99 (payed it dearly though at 300$ incl. 5 disks, the backlit remote, and a monster cable). I can honestly say I haven't regretted buying an MD player/recorder over an mp3 player. Anyone who wishes to carry a few hours of music without breaking the bank will enjoy it.

Also, I agree with kindami, having a USB-to-optical or optical-to-optical does yield much better sound if you're recording from mp3s. If you're recording from a cd (stereo) monster cables yield excellent results as well

p.s. get the ones that are the size of the disk but thicker, they are much handier than the larger units

If you have sound blaster live and MD recorder, try its LiveDrive II which has a optical I/O.
I am using it to record mp3 songs to my SONY MZR90 and Sharp MT831. It's very neat.

recording minidiscs isn't bad...leave winamp running, turn off all sounds in other background programs...connect miniplug to miniplug cable from sound card to the minidisc recorder, hit record and play in winamp simultaneously...sit back and wait. i have a mzr91 that i bought a year ago for $360...now md's are alot cheaper =[ but if you're picky about quality, and dont have the sblive w/ the daughter card...there's a few addons for the sblive value. i got a hoontech sb db II for around $25 which is like the daughter card, so i record md's from my computer to my md via optical cable. the optical cable will cost about $20 and i can noticeably hear the difference in quality.

Like I said, my player isn't the smallest out there, but it's damn small enough, especially when I bought it. I already had a portable recorder and a system that has the ability to record, so for me to buy a more expensive and somewhat larger recorder/player isn't worth it.

I think it's just personal opinion. I'm a big MD fan, although I admit that sometimes I wonder if the investment is worth it.

I bought a Sony MZ-R70 for $200 from HK (it's a Japan model, the AC adapter has 2 additional adaptors which makes it huuuuge). Unfortunately it was a round optical outlet. To record mp3s through a digital line I got a digital I/O for my SB Live! card.

In my last trip to Japan I spent another $180 on a very nice CD player that had a round digital output plus a square optical <-> round optical connector.

Now I can make MD's through CD's and mp3's pretty easily. Sometimes it's a hassle through the wires, but MD players are very portable. I already ordered this MD player . . .

As for MD player versus mp3 player, sure MD's are a bigger investment, but you can hold more songs and more versatility with MD's than limited to either 32 or 64 mb mp3 player. Just my opinion . . .

Is it a better idea to put my mp3s to audio cd and them record them to md through the regular stereo rather than try to connect from a SB Live! Value? I can't get that add-on card w/an optical out for the Value card, right? I have a sharp recording portable from the mercata dealio way back when, and wanna get a md player for the car too.

thx

The minidisc player is no longer on the website. You have to call now if you want to order.
