MD is pretty cool, I always wished it caught on, but the price was too high. It's probably too late for the format to gain mass appeal, but this is a pretty good price for a Net MD recorder.
$91.48 shipped at Ubid Superstore

It lets you do high-speed transfer of audio files on your PC directly to the MD recorder. I believe it also can do PC-based titling as well.
Looks fun, I ordered one. I have an old MD changer in my car and my wife's car has a CD head unit that can also play MD's so maybe it's time to dust off the old MD blanks and start using them again.

EDIT 2/25/03: Now $81.48 shipped (thanks GeneValgene).

Don't know why these never really caught on here in the states. I was in Japan earlier this year and they (MD) are all the rage. I would say from what I saw, they are even more popular than MP3s.

I have a md player and I love it. To me its easier than using an mp3 player. I have had 2 in the past, sony network mp3 player, a nike phillips one. The md player's ability to load around 30 songs or more with great quality is nice, and the cheap cost of blank mds is even nicer.

Any clue if this is a plastic or metal case? My MZ-R70 has a metal case, and I know a lot of the newer units have plastic cases. I suspect a plastic-cased unit would not take the abuse my R70 has with barely a scratch. I've been looking for a cheap NetMD deck though. Hmmm, NetMD or iPod....decisions, decisions.
That aside, MD ROCKS! I too think it's FAR superior to solid-state mp3 players. Also, MD is EVERYWHERE on college campuses, I go to RIT and I think literally 1/2 the students have MD stuff.

the 5xx series is 100% plastic. the 7xx is 50%, the top is metal while the back is plastic. the 9xx is all metal, and so are the n1 and n10.

not quite sure about the players, but i think the 5xx is plastic and 7xx is metal. the 9xx, and e10 are metal, that i know for sure.

This is a great MD player. I bought one and returned it because i didn't think it's worth retail price. But at 90+, i think this is a pretty good deal. you can fit about 30-40 songs on one md, that's one of the main reasons i returned mine. I didn't want to deal w/ all those MDs just to play a few hours of music.

Isn't there some sort of copy protection built into net MD that doesn't let you rip some audio CDs?

How well is this unit to record several hours of continues music / dj sessions ? Is the stated 5 hours of recording at a really low quality?

plus, the highest quality can only rip at 1.6X, slow compared to MP3s + USB

rip at highest quality is useless.. you can't really. and ripping speeds is heavily dependent on your cpu, since it has to convert whatever to atrac3, then transfer. on my celery 720, it came out to only ~1.5x@lp2 mode. And that is one of my gripes about MD (and the cost of the 9x/nx series). very nice price tho.

dont think so... anyways, you can always record using the optical in and a dvd or cd player that has optical out.

Magically change your MZ-N505 to a MZ-N1 @ Your own risk!

Thought you people buying this might want to know about this hack. It adds all the features except for personal disk memory and mic which are hardware related. I have owned a N1 since its release in the states and I am in love with it. my biggest problems though are that (A) I cannot upload, which will hopefully be fixed in the future and (B) OMG Uploaded songs are protected and cannot be deleted from a MD until checked in from your computer. Problem (B) can be fixed with a simple Nero Imagedrive solution which you can find in the forums I linked above.

MiniDisc players are phat cuz you can take them to concerts or live music and record.

If you just play MP3's or something it really isn't more useful than a MP3 player.

So if you record live music or off of the internet radio (say if you like a radio station from your hometown but you're away from college) you can record it digitally.

My friend has one and he recorded a Coldplay concert ...it sounds so good. The only thing is is that you should buy a stereo microphone.

I just bought a MD player.

So far so good.
