I used to have the Canon s100 camera.. and it got stolen..

So now I am in the market again to get a digital camera - which would you recommend? The reason why I got the s100 was because of the size.. but all my friends have the Sony's.. I know its slightly thicker, but it fits in my pocket fine. They claim the picture quality is better.. and the megapixels go up to 4-5.

I am interested in picture quality, night flash quality, size of the camera.. your opinions??

I would go with Canon...

With Sony you are stuck with using Sony memory sticks, which only works on other Sony products... but with Canon you are most likely working with CompactFlash memory, which work for a much larger variety of applications in the future (eg. PDAs)...

As far as image quality goes, it really depends on the particular models you are considering... Can't really say one brand is better than the other...

Well, I have a toshiba e310 and it takes SDRAM.. so I won't be able to use CF anyway.. and I think all the prices for memory are roughly the same right? I would probably get at least the 128MB, preferably the 256 if possible.. so whether its the sony memory stick or the CF, shouldn't matter too much as far as price is concerned..

I've just heard the image quality on the sony's are better.. but the size is a bit bigger than the canon.. so I'm trying to see how you guys have decided?

When you invest in a camera, go with a camera maker who also is an optical house (lenses.) Picture quality rules. Don't be a lemming following your friends - go Canon!

I used to have the Sony F505. I now have the Canon S30. Its not really fair to compare the two, and I havent played around with any of the new Sony cameras. But I think the picture quality in regards to the color on the Canon are awesome. I would have a hard time switching to another brand.

Canon S40. Only slightly more expensive than the S30.

I have the Canon G2. Very good. Current model is the G3.

Definitely go with a camera that uses CF. Cheaper and faster than SM or Mem sticks. Its also much more standard for other "hi-tech" toys. Only reason I can think to go Sony is if you already have a bunch of Sony stuff like a Clie or memory stick mp3 player etc. Get a nice Viking 256 mb CF card from Amazon and you'll be good to go.

I got a Nikon 885 last year and I love it. Its small too, about same size as a Canon Elph series, its just about 2.5x as thick. If you want an ultra-compact though, Canon is the way to go.

Well I guess I am the minority here.
I had the Nikon Cool Pix 950 and now I have the Sony F707, great camera, great lens. What's wrong with memory sticks?
I have four 128's I got for 199 on Amazon with free shipping.
It is not like you have to buy them more then once.
Any ways I like it, I know Canons are good too, go to a store and look at them, try them out and read some reviews.
Good luck

What if cost wasn't an issue between the Sony or the CF? The SONY looks like it takes better pics at night.. is the lens on the canon that much betteR?? it's hard to tell looking at the reviews at dpreview..

I would go with a Canon simply because they have been making lenses for a long time. Even though the camera is digital, it still requires a good lens. Canon, Kodak, and Olympus have all been making cameras for quite a while compared to other manufacturers.

...so u guys are all comparing it just by how long these companies have been in business. How about actual quality of the pics of sony vs canon instead of relying on how long teh company has been making cams?

I like Canon, have the S30.

If I were buying now, I'd get the new S230

3 minute movie clips...

sony

i've got the P7, and for my gf i would get her a U20, and i'd get the DSC85 as a 2ndary cam for more quality reasons. who cares if its proprietary, since you are just doing a transfer to your computer anyways. and if yuo want to view it on pda, just get a Sony Clie PDA. i have the T665C and i believe its better than any handspring or palm model in the same price range. MP3 playback, convenient buttons, awesome styling. sony is a proprietary format that you do NOT need to worry about dying. i think sony is the number one sold brand for digital cameras. for PDAs, i think they best handspring and palm on comparison reviews.

Both of them make nice upper end digital cameras, are you looking for just a point and shoot style camera or would you like to have some more control over your pictures?
