The s330 actually uses a different body than the 200 or 230. The s200 and s230 are both full-auto only, and only have a 2x zoom lens, whereas the s330 has a 3x optical and is slightly larger in size. The s330 is sort of a step up from the 230, which is really more of a replacement for the s200. I wouldn't be surprised to see an s430 out soon using the bigger Elph body and a 4 MP sensor. Whoever corrected me about the audio on those two models was right, my bad

None of the Elphs have type II CF slots due to space limitations, so Microdrives are out. Flash CF cards go up to 1.5GB in type 1 now, though these cameras are all almost definately using Firmware which may restrict them to 1GB and below.

I love both of those cameras. The c-4000 is a great deal for a 4 megapixel camera, with a macro mode that is nothing short of amazing. The camera's only downside is the Smartmedia card it uses, which can only go up to 128MB and has been discontinued already.

The C-5050 is also a great camera. It has the macro mode of the c-4000 with better resolution and more importantly, the super-bright Olympus lens. This lens has the widest aperture of almost any other digital camera out there at f1.8. This means that you will be able to use it in lower light than other cameras and that the camera can use faster shutter speeds than other cameras inthe same amount of light, helping ensure that you actually get the picture you wanted. It also takes 3 different types of memory card; CompactFlash type I and II, including microdrives, SmartMedia, and the new XD card.

I'm a C-3000 owner, so I tend to be a little biased, but I think either of these cameras would make a great buy.

One last post

The digital camera FAQ is up now, which will hopefully answer most of your general questions. Send me an email if there is anything you think you should be added or changed on it.

Go Canon PowerShot G2 or G3. Plenty of features and excellent quality. Probably best of all, they use non-proprietory CF cards

Absolutely love my Olympus D460....

Great pictures!!

Also, 35mm Camera manufacturers tend to offer better lenses than electronics manufacturers.

How goes the selection process '510?

It sure becomes obvious that there are many many routes to get you to your final destination - the picture.
How about looking at things from the reverse direction?

With digital photography developing so quickly, there is Sooo much diversity out there (which is good And bad for us consumers).
When I was choosing my new camera this fall, it seemed the question I was always coming back to wasn't about features, memory, lens, etc. It was what pictures WON"T I be able to take with a particular camera!

* Is it too big to take with me wherever I want to go? (Think of the shots you'd miss if that were the case)

* How closely does it focus in Normal (not macro) mode? (So many of the pictures I took with the Sony (P30) were from Very close range. The perspective and compositional possibilities would be entirely missing in a camera that only focused as closely as say - 2 or 3 feet. Focusing to 1 foot or less really opens up some possibilities)

* And how well does it shoot in Macro mode? (The Sony was absolutely outstanding in macro mode. The transition from regular mode to macro was completely seamless, and the picture quality was nothing short of astounding. My Minolta on the other hand is only good for still-lifes in macro mode. I REALLY miss the close up capability, and miss shots due to that)

* How well does it focus in low light? "Low light" in digital photography really means indoors in ambient light. (The Sony could focus in almost absolute dark (and sometimes did!) WITHOUT its focus assist lamp (I never had to use the lamp! believe it or not). There's nothing more frustrating than losing a shot due to the camera not being able to focus lock. So ask yourself, how many indoor shots will I be taking? Do I want to exclude "X" many shot possibilities?)

* Night Shooting. (These can be awfully fun (with fill-flash or without). Will the camera take nice clean night shots without the darks turning to mush? (something few cameras could claim as recently as last year). There are Several factors that go into this: CCD performance, lens speed, slow enough shutter speeds, anti-noise algorithms, lens flaring, etc, etc. Read the reviews, take a look at people's sample pics)

* Specialized scene photography: Action pics, scenics, stitched panoramics, etc. (Does the camera offer some control over apertures and shutter speeds? (either manually or automatically via "scene modes?") One of the big reasons I switched from a point/shoot was to get the Aperture priority, Shutter priority, and Manual modes. I shoot almost exclusively in the Aperture priority mode. Often the settings that the Sony came up with were not the ones I would have selected. This feature really affects how "special" your photos may turn out. Are all of your photos going to look like "snapshots?")

* How well does the flash work? (Not just its range. How well does it fill-flash? How well does it expose (at very close and very long (over 10 feet) conditions? Is the white balance correct in flash pictures (the Sony P30 was bad at white balance (this has much improved in the newer models). Ask yourself, how many (and types of) flash pictures will I be taking? Some of my best pictures were indoors with flash - very close up (within 3 feet). The subject tends to stand out, and the background goes very dark)

* How long does it take to start up? (How many fleeting moments will you miss?)

* Similarly, what is the shot to shot delay? With flash or without?

* How long can your movies go? How good is the sound? (Will all of your movies be just a bunch of clicks and muffled mutterings?)

* How good will the print quality be? (Will ALL of the pictures you take from this moment on be limited to 8 X 10 max? Will you NEVER want one of them blown up bigger?)

* How quickly and easily can you move through the menu system? (This week I just lost a shot of an astounding sunset while I was driving home from work. I couldn't get the settings set quickly enough (and my window rolled down, and avoid a head-on.. it was extremely frustrating) In retrospect, if I had just turned it to "full auto" mode, I would have had it (I was getting too fancy for my own good). Alas, the parting clouds closed again, and the moment was gone forever

Well, there are more factors that can determine just what photo opportunities you will have to live without (given whichever camera you choose at this time and date). I hope looking at things from this perspective helps you in your selection process some. It did me.

Good luck,
R2

SO what did you end up with? The Sony's macromode and lowlight focus are IMO it's main strengths... I almost want the Sony as well for those shots.

Just curious what you purchased & what swayed you.

PS - my mother loved the S200. I did notice that it doesnt do sound with it's movies unlike my 330...

Well - thank you EVERYONE for all the suggestions/advice and help!! I really appreciate the time you guys took in answering the questions and talking about the features/benefits.. =)

I am right about to place the order.. I will most likely order the Sony p9 for: $406. Check out this thread:

LINK

The SONY has a higher mp than the Canon s200/3xx series and it takes better pics in the low light/dark. The canon shutter speed is also a bit slower which I didn't like.. the sony is a bit bigger, but still portable enough.

Plus I have two friends that have the P9 that swayed me to get that one instead..

Thats a nice sony, I've decided on the DSC-S85 myself..Newegg says instock 1-31 at $449 shipped. I was so on the fence between the Olympus C-730 ULTRA ZOOM, the Cannon G2 and the Sony. The Sony Battery + Carl Zeiss lens and excellent reviews put it over the top for me after several weeks of research. I think all 3 are great though.

Looks like you already decided, but I w.as going to chime in with a P-9 vote. I have one and I think its great. Its small, light weight and takes good pictures, and the unlimited movie mode is the best part about it for me. I find myself taking a lot of short clips of things happening and it works out and the quality is pretty good too.

I still don't know how to take good night shots with it, but I think I will try to learn after this thread, because all my nightshots sucked and I thought it was the camera, but I guess its me. Me and aphex ordered our cameras from Dell as wlel, and we had an agonizing wait for it to arrive. Heres hoping you get yours soon .

that is somewhat too bad... current cameras by sony are not memory stick pro compatible (except for the cybershot 717 which i have). so there are no sticks larger than 128 that you can use. if you can get by with a 128MB stick as the highest capacity stick you can use, that's no problem though. i've outgrown 128 with my 5 megapixel (4.92) camera. =P

Are they not coming out w/ sticks larger than 128? Or they totally dump that and just have larger ones for the pro?

Stay away from Sony and their Memorystick!!!
Those little fvckers are only compatible with Sony products and the new generation of mem sticks is not even compatible with the old one ...

Good choice. Digital SLRs aside , the Sonys will produce better quality pictures , they are best built cameras on the market and their
batteries are the best. Memory sticks are cheaper than ever right now too, 2 128mb sticks would provide most people with more than they
can use.
With a single 128mb stick and my s85 I get 65@ 2272x1704, 133@ 1600x1200 , 202@ 1280x960 or 789@ 640x480.

I have the Canon G2. Very good. Current model is the G3.

If you want an S40, you should probably spend a couple extra bucks and get the S45 instead. Some camera sites sell them for practically the same price, but the S45 has improved focusing capability and a better movie mode.

I'm a huge canon fan. I own a minolta. Canon makes wonderful cameras tho. I want to replace my 35MM Canon A2 with a digital version. I keep hearing word of a D60 like "rebel" version due out sometime soon.

I had a sony camera and it works great.
As for style, I go with sony but agreed that canon was in the camera business long before sony comes.
any of them is good. And btw, the biggest thing for a sony is they cost too much
Just compare sony f707 and canon G3, sony cost at least $200 more given that they are in the same class.

you really cant compare the 707 and the g3. for a couple of reasons. the sony has 5x optical zoom, nightshot, sony's multiburst mode, and its a 5 meg camera. so they really arnt in the same class. The g3 is 4 meg, and i love the flip out lcd.
