Does anyone know the technical spec of Sony's network adapter or the specs on what kind of port it is plugged into? I'm just wondering if there is any advantage in speed, lag, latency, whatever, to using Sony's adapter v.s. using a third party USB adapter.

Well, I don't know if you'd be able to get a driver for the PS2 OS to use a USB ethernet adapter, unless you're talking about running Linux on it. Anyway, this is straight from Sony's site.

All of the reviews and mags and sony and everyone else says that there is no driver support for 3rd part adapters. This is something that sony set up and is being followed by almost all video game makers. The only exception is that Tony Hawk 3 and a few others were able to use 3rd party adapters.

Add to that the fact that you'd be hard-pressed to find a USB 10/100 adapter for less than the PS2 adapter ($29.99), and the PS2 also has a built-in 56k modem.

Actually there are a few 3rd party USB adapters that work perfectly with the PS2. The most common one being used, and I've used with no problems, is the Linksys 100TX USB adapter.

This is total BS:

Which ISPs will it support?
The Network Adaptor works with just about any ISP, including AOL, AT&T Worldnet®Service, Earthlink®, SBC-Yahoo!®Dial and Sympatico®. Check with your ISP for details.

RoadRunner tech support gave me no help when I couldn't connect last night. I never got on either.

Good point. Isn't RoadRunner a free ISP?

Maybe someone should e-mail sony about the compatibility with free ISPs.

I bet if you e-mailed them they would figure out how to get it to work.

I guess it isn't a simple plug and play.

Nope, road runner is a cable modem ISP, and those aren't free. Its more of a brand name than anything else, becuase ive used ATT, Mediaone & time warner cable modems and they've all been called road runner.

Does anyone know how to set up a 3rd party usb-ethernet adapter to work on the ps2? I have a Linksys USB100M usb-ethernet adapter and Comcast High Speed internet. When I tried to configure the settings on the PS2 for Madden 2003, it says "no hardware detected". Anyone get this to work?

I don't know if it will work. Articles that I have read in gaming magazines say that 3rd party adapters worked for tony hawk 3. This is because the PS network adapter was behind schedule. The future games may not work on the 3rd party peripherals. You might try to do a search on the playstation underground webpage. Maybe someone there knows more.
