I just ordered one of these from newegg for $506 - $60 discount. it has a 500:1 contrast ratio, 16 ms rise/fall, dvi in, and 2 analog inputs on it, among other features. Does anybody have any input on this monitor ? has anyone used it, or seen it in use ? how does it stack with other decent 17" lcd monitors out there. Any information that anyone has will be helpful, as there really isnt anything available that i can find on it (though it did just get released in july). Thanks for the input.

Why did you buy it and then ask this question? The specs from just read what you put are very good, even though I dont know why it would have to Analog inputs.

i bought it because i currently dont have a monitor, and it wont be here for another few days, and if it turns out that its garbage, i can always cancel the order. I just moved across the country, and i wasnt about to have my CRT shipped, and i couldnt go any longer without using my computer. thanks for the quick response, but that is my resoning.

These are a new design for sony, they are suppose to be much better than anything they had released before, and thats why im trying to get an opinion from someone who has used one, not someone guessing what it should look like based on the history .... i can do that by myself.

Thanks for trying to help though

Acidpad if you do end up getting the monitor, it would be great if you posted your thoughts and comments about it. Maybe write a little review if you had time? I'm looking to get an LCD and any first hand experience is gold. Thx

ok, got the monitor. Frist thing first, no dead or stuck pixels, and that is always good.

The construction of the monitor is beautiful. it has a swivel base, very small footprint, nice tilt range, and an interesting height adjusting mechanism.
The interesting thing about the height adjuster is how smooth it is. you move it up and it goes real easy, and feels like it going to fall back down, but it doesnt.

now to the important part, image quality. The new sony has a brightness auto adjuster that senses the brightness being displayed, and adjusts it to optimal levels. so like if i go into a game that would normally look dark and need brightness adjusted on an LCD, the sony automatically fixes it so that it transitions seemlessly. There are times when you need to do a manual override and just press one button on the monitor to bring the brightness up to the preset high level. (you can adjust it little by little too in the menu). There has been no ripping or ghosting at all. i have watched a dvd movie, and played a few games, including UT2k3 to test this, and it looks beautiful. All the colors are vivid and the display is sharp.

Overall, i am truly impressed with the monitor. I have avoided LCD for a long time because of quality issues, but they seem to be pretty well under control now. I highly recommend this monitor for an enthusiast high end LCD 17" monitor.

Anyone have any idea on how the sdm-x73 sizes up against the Viewsonic VP171B???

They both have pretty comparable specks aside from the Sony having speakers. I am trying to decide between buying the two and am leaning towards Sony right now.

I got the Viewsonic VP171B right when it came out (2-3months ago?), but wasn't that impressed with it. I usually only play CS on my computer and everything seemed too dark on the monitor even when you turn the brightness all the way up. However, web surfing was amazing with the DVI input and I could tell the difference right away between the vp171b and my 19inch Sony CRT. Also, be aware that you can only really run your games at 1280 or else things looks like crap, so you'd probably need a pretty nice vid card.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to go for the Sony unless I find out something negative about it, or a better product in the next few days. Newegg had it with a $50 instant rebate right now.

It's back down to $80 now, which is still prettyd good. The big rebate may have something to do with the new model coming out, the SDM-HX73, looks to have the same performance with better speakers and a much nicer looking design.
