i do recommend against refurb items, for the general purpose that what goes wrong, will go wrong again...

Ew. Refurbed. Especially for a CDR/RW drive. Probably all the returns Sony got when CompUSA had it on sale for $199 a few weeks back.

trevorhull - To my knowledge only a $30 off $150 or $50 off $500 coupon exists.

If you would like either just send me an e-mail and I'll show you where to find them (since it's against forum rules to post the web site here).

What do you guys think of the 8/4/32 Spressa for $173.95? I'm debating between this and the Yamaha 8/8/24. Both are around the same price; the Sony has a faster read speed but the Yamaha has a faster rewrite speed. Not that it matters much since I'll be using a separate drive for reading and I doubt I'll be burning on CD-RW's much. But can anyone comment on how good the Spressa is relative to the Plextor? Thanks

Yeah, probably better to get the Yamaha (it's like 8 bucks cheaper?) cause I've heard people say it's best not to use the CDRW to read CD or it wears it out?

I bought the Spressa 8x/4x/32x from buy.com using the $30 off a while ago. It works great, as long as you use decent media.

As for wearing out the RW part of the drive by using the read abilities of the drive, well, that doesn't make much sense, does it.

Stick up those noses, way up now, on those refurbs. I have owned for at least a year:
1) Refurb. HP Scanner
2) Refurb. Epson printer
3) Refurb. Iiyama monitor
4) Refurb. Sony CDRW
5) Refurb. Logitech Kyb. and rat
6) Refurb. Laptop Computer
The little sisters family owns lots more of these awful refurbs.
Problems -0-
Hey, it's fine with me if you're in denial about the quality. And by all means, please be my guest and pay double for products with the same or worse repair history.

It's an internal IDE drive right? CompUSA and Circuit City had these on sale for $199.99 a few weeks ago.

The 10x appears to be an external, the 8x is internal. If you search for 'rewritable eide' (notice the 'e' missing from rewritable) on buy.com it seems to pull up a relevant list of some of their CD-RW's. Kinda tricky doing searches on that site.

How exactly does one connect an external IDE device? I'm familiar with SCSI adapters with external connections, but I've never ever seen an external IDE port...what gives?

To make this post a bit more on-topic: I bought the Plextor 8x4x32 from buy.com last week for $154 and it kicks ass! I've been trying my hardest to make a coaster with it and it's impossible...I even managed to lock my machine up while burning a disc and it finished it! Keep in mind that the difference of 2x is quite different when talking about 8x vs 10x as opposed to 2x or 4x vs 8x (you're only going to shave off 1 - 2 minutes at most)...I've got no regrets with my choice.

Anybody know that can Sony 8/4/32 SPRESSA CD-RW drive (CRX140E/CH2) burn 700Mb cdr disc?
And what different between CRX140E/CH and CRX140E/CH2? Two of this looks like the same.

It can burn 80min CD-Rs...you just have to use a program other than the one that's packaged with the drive. The programs, in a word, suck.

I suggest you download Nero. Awesome burning program that copies just about anything and ensures buffer underruns never happen. http://www.ahead.de makes it.

As for the difference between the CH and the CH2 versions, there isn't.

Well, maybe the CH2 has improved speed in reading CDs, but otherwise the drives are identical.
