sony vgn-nr160 e laptop

i took in mother in law laptop to check it,and
it wasnot activated yet.did that' then next time i booted it
would not load,screen comes in at 1/2 size almost startup screen
but no message.the thing won't, restore,reinstall.
i checked and one mem module was not all the way seated.
i put in two 1 gb sticks (same same)
any ideas guys.

Why did you take it to "check" I'm assuming she was having some type of issue. Virus, bad HDD? you give us no history and that make is hard to help.

Try a Boot to safe mode? What OS?

Dell's have a diagnostic partition you can access at boot. Does Sony have anything like that.

the laptop is running win 7 home premium.when i setup it up she never activated.
when i got to activate had no problems.she later told me the laptop shutdown and was hot.
when i started checking it out one stick of ram was not inserted in slot??
it will not go into safemode at all.i can't seem to get bios screen either.

your posts are kind of hard to understand.
is this a new laptop?
if so, why don't you just ask wherever you got it for a replacement/rma?
if it's still under warranty you could send it back to the manufacturer

if not, to fix the overheating if you have some extra AS-5/thermal paste try reseating the hsf.

Close all open programs.

If you cannot start the operating system, the VAIO Recovery Center software can be accessed by pressing the F10 key at the BIOS screen, but all the hardware component tests may not be available.
You also can access the VAIO Recovery Center software by booting the computer using the Recovery Discs. Insert Recovery Disc #1 and then restart the computer.
