I just turned on CNBC to check for you. The replacement TV I just got barely does it. It just makes it look like the ticker is hurrying the quote that's at the left edge off the screen. Doesn't bother me at all...I have to stare at the ticker for a long time for me to even notice it. Now I'm looking at it and I don't see it.
It's a KV-32FS16 made in November 2000
I LOVE THIS TV FOR THIS PRICE!!! But I wish I could afford a widescreen TV, letterbox still bugs me on any square TV! LOL

could someone clue me in...just WHAT does Buffboy have to do with this wega deal?! He's so full of useful info...kinda like me saying:
I'm SO EXCITED, MY DUCK PILLOW SHIPPED!!!!

Could someone clue me in on the 16:9 enhanced DVD mode? Is it suppose to shrink your picture to just the middle 1/3 of the screen?! Do you use it for Anamorphic movies only? The manual doesn't say anything about it!

The 16:9 format works if your dvd player outputs for 16:9 format (widescreen). This will display everything squished horizontally (ppl are skinny ) or look like everything is stretched vertically.

Enable 16:9 compression and everything will look right. If you watch a movie that is 2.35:1, you end up only using 30% of the screen.

Remember to enable 16:9 screen format on dvd player. Other options i know of is 4:3, letterbox, pan and scan.

Hope this helps.

So I did try it the right way. DVD Player has 3 options for which TV you have, 4:3 standard, 4:3 letterbox and 16:9

I put it on 16:9 and put the TV in enhanced mode. Why would you want to watch such a small picture on your big TV?!?!?! LOL

K-Squared and RuNok,

Whether I have a Wega or not or it is working or not is not the point. I simply suggested that we try to follow the rules around here and move to the appropriate forum.

<< I'm so tired of hear somebodys opinion of how a thread should be handled. Don't read the posts if thats how you feel. We on the other hand have a damn right to post useful infomation to each other. >>

What a hypocrite!! If you don't want to move it, don't! I am not an admin...just someone making a suggestion. You two are amusing!

All I have to say is hardy har har. No on a serious note I received my second TV today and its near perfect. It was manufactured in Nov 2000,It came from the east coast warehouse and its a 32fs16 now. It had the 800.com tape around the box as well as the extra packing material. This was not the case with the first TV which was a 32fs12 and from the west coast warehouse. All this leads me to believe that the settings or tube is better on the picture in a picture model. I had read this on numerous web sites too. This model was upgraded for free due to my inconvience from 800.com. WOW,I'm an 800.com purchaser for life. It also has to be said that they offered me for my troubles $200 off the first set to let a Sony Service Center fix it instead. I'm now satisfied with my purchase.

Tharpertx - First, just which forum should we take this thread to? Second, who sh it-died-and made you god today? IF the Moderator decides this thread no longer "fits" within the bounds of this forum, s/he will either decide to lock the thread or provide a not-so-subtle hint to take it to another forum....

The point is, that it's the Mod's job to decide when a thread has run its course, not yours!....

geoffkin:

most obvious benefit from WEGA's Enhanced DVD function...

-you gain 120 lines of resolution...

how?? when you view a 16:9 movie on a 4:3 screen, the dvd player uses those 120 lines to make the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (letterbox) to maintain the movie's original aspect ratio.

in 16:9 output mode, you don't need black bars, so those 120 lines returned to making the picture.

i think the wega set creates the black bars itself when the DVD-E mode is turned on and then the whole image is vertically compressed to restore 16:9 aspect ratio.

hope this helps,

-FMT

This deal is warm at best. I would gladly pay anywhere from $200 to $1000 more for a 36 Wega XBR model. In which i did. I gladly paid $1800 for my 36 XBR. Let me tell you that it is well worth it. It is the sh!t. It is the best tv out there. I congrat everyone who got in on this deal, but if you had some extra money to spend then you should have went with the XBR. 3D filter screening. HDTV ready. And just looks incredible.

XBR baby

If you were going with the 36" XBR, why stop there? This thread isn't about the XBR - it's about the 32" 32FS12 model. If you are going to spend $2,500 on a TV, why not get a *true* HDTV with *true* 16:9 capabilities. On a earlier post, I commented on a 55" Mitsubishi HDTV that runs about $3,500. This is the TV you should have purchased if you wanted to be truly impressed by an outstanding picture.

Do the math: $2,500 for a 36" XBR + $1,000 for a HDTV decoder = $3,500. Plus, you still have a 36" TV.

Or, $3,500 for *true* HDTV TV and you have a 55" TV.

Looks like a 'no-brainer' to me.

With the money I saved over the XBR, around 1000+, I should be able to get a nice HDTV set in a couple of years when all the dust settles. anyways, watching widescreen when it becomes mainstream on 4:3 screen sucks. within the next year, new HDTV sets will put your XBR to shame. if you can afford an XBR and have money to burn, more power to ya.

I really like my plain vanilla Wega, its nice and simple.

I think we are wondering a bit off the subject here, this sucks, that sucks, whatever. I have called Sony to come check out my VVega, if they cannot fix it via adjustments, I will get it replaced by 800, maybe score an upgrade like some of the other people. I have checked the B&M stores around here and NONE of the store displays I scoped out had the infamous "wave" (although, admittedly, some of the display units were not able to be truely tested because of their setup, ala Best Buy). I do not think it is a design flaw, and the flat screen does take a little getting used, for some people.

Merry Christmas to all (or Happy Holidays if you prefer)!

Thanks to byuva, this could be a record first post.

<< anyone know if they'll still honor this discount on this tv ??? >>

No, they don't. At best, you might find a $20 coupon, purchase through E-bates and get a 5% rebate and *possibly* 800.Com will run another sale on the TVs giving 10% off. It looks like they pick one of their categories and offer 10% off during a weekly run. I doubt that MSN Passport would pair up with 800.Com again. I believe that those who got in on this deal, did so with precise timing. This should go down as the "deal of the year" for some - I know it does for me.

I ordered a replacement unit last week, bumped up to the FS16 form the FS12, had to pay an additional $70, but I would have done that originaly, if that model had been available. I had to fight a bit w/ the rep, she wanted to charge me $100 difference and could not figure out how I came up w/ $70 because the difference on the TV was $100 ($100 - (20% + 10%) = $70). She didn't want to give me the discount on the difference, I asked to talk to a supervisor, she said OK, then came back on and said he said it was OK. I just hope the replacement doesn't disply the wave problem.

This is definitely the deal of the year!
It deserves having 300+ posts.

With all the posts about HDTV this and that, the key point is that
we scored outstanding TV's for killer prices. Yeah sure, I saw
the Panasonic Tau 34" at BBuy and it will knock your socks off,
but I dont have $3799 to blow on TV that may be obselete 8 years
from now.

BTW, Ive got about 10 remotes for all the A/V components, so
finding a good universal remote is key.I just bought the One For All
remote at Sears for $25 - $10 7 am GC at B&M's.

Merry Xmas to all
(now if I could only get great deals on buying furniture -
which is such a HUGE ripoff, paying what they say at the stores!!)

I still love my tv.
But I think there is something wrong with the "suround sound" on it.
Anybody else notice something funny about it?
Seems like it it is in stereo most of the time and then the suround will kick in for a few seconds then stop.
Or is it just me?
I never had stereo tv before.
Now if the rat bastards at amazon would ship my DVD that I ordered on the 17th and still has not been sent I would be happy.

I just recieved my Pioneer SD-582-HD5 58" HDTV about three weeks ago. I hooked up the Pioneer DV-434 DVD Player with progressive scan to it and it took watching movies to a hole new level. The picture quality is outstanding. I watched the movie A Bugs Life and it looked like you could walk up and put your hand right in the screen. The colors were true to life. etronics.com had it for $1600.00 less than MSRP
