fitzm--that is correct. The feature is commonly known as "anamorphic squeeze". Anamorphic movies are encoded with more lines of resolution than a 4:3 TV can display. So a DVD player set to 4:3 mode will remove lines to format it correctly and fill in the space with black bars (i.e. the black bars are created by the DVD player, and not present in the actual recorded movie.). When you play an anamorphic movie on a 16 x 9 (widescreen) TV, the lines are not removed and the picture fills more of the screen. This results in elimination (or very nearly) of black bars in movies filmed in 1.8:1 and smaller bars in movies filmed in 2.33:1--plus an AWESOME picture because you are able to see those extra lines of resolution that are removed when watching on 4:3 TVs.
On these Sonys, however, it is a completely different technology. They simply squeeze every line so you aren't missing any lines of resolution (aka looks awesome) but everything's formatted correctly (i.e. people aren't all stretched out). The TV creates the black bars. As far as your DVD player is concerned, you have a widescreen TV. The TV handles the squeezing and formatting.
I have heard that anamorphic squeeze makes a very noticible difference in quality, although I can't vouch for that myself since my newly ordered 27" WEGA hasn't arrived yet. It is definitely a a worthwhile feature.
Keep in mind that not all DVDs are encoded anamorphically. Ones that aren't use the normal TV lines of resolution and have the black bars present
in the actual movie. These are mostly older movies (most studios have caught on to the fact that widescreen TV is going to become the standard). But personally, I won't buy a DVD unless it's got an anamorphic transfer (sometimes on the box it will say "enhanced for widescreen (16 x 9) TVs, sometimes it will not even be listed as a feature).
geoffkin-- I would recommend this:

I have the 27" version ready and waiting for my new TV to arrive and it is sturdy and attractive--plus it's designed to accomodate the front-heavy WEGA (it includes several features to keep it attached including a buckle on the back. 800.com might have them too!
Hope this helps guys. I'm jealous of y'all getting the 32" version for only a couple hundred more than I paid for the 27"... oh well.
