Darthkim - Ain't this deal SWEET!? Especially for us California Folks who usually get The Shaft on Sales Tax?!

My friend was called by Eagle Air yesterday at NOON and they said they would deliver it between 3-5 yesterday, they never showed! He called them pissed this morning and they are bringing it today. I'm going over to check it out. I set up the delivery of mine for Monday! I did the SONY WEGA stand deal at 800 last Tuesday, so I should be getting that next week also. I also got the top of the line MONSTER component cables from them for about $50.
I got the 32" PIP for about $700. This will hold me over until HDTV sets come WAY down in price and the signals all switch over to HD in HOPEFULLY 5-6 years, but no one knows for sure when that will happen.

Hell yea this is a sweet deal for CAli homeys..

I purchased the wega because my company stopped making tube tv's. I admit that HDTV looks great ( I See them EVERYDAY) but, we are still quite a few years away from

1st - setting a final standard (between dtv, hdtv, cable digital, etc)
2nd - cost - even though my company had a christmas special selling a 55 inch hdtv unit for half off....(it was still too much)

but i will tell you this... by the time HDTV becomes affordable, DLP 2 will be out and it gonna be sharp as hell....

but until then... wega will be my style

I was at BB yesterday and it was sad, all those people thinking those wega's were a bargain.. (LOL)

<< im a little scard though, people are trying to tell me i should have gotten the JVC in the latest consumer reports, or even a GE, and a few years down the road, get an HDTV. the difference is $50-200, respectively. >>

I purchased the latest issue of Consumer Reports a few days ago. I also saw the ratings for the Sony - which appeared to be in the middle of the road in regards to repair histories. Also, how can you establish a repair history on an item that has only been out for a little over a year? I guess they might be including some other Sony models. One of the worst repair histories (according to the Consumer Reports issue) is with the Proscan TVs. Imagine paying such a premium for a TV and getting stiffed with one that has a high failure rate!

I think you did fine by your purchase. HDTV isn't that close, yet. I saw a 32" Panasonic (truly flat) screen like the Wegs TVs today. The Panasonic is a high definition television, but comes in a 4:3 aspect ratio and its price was $1,750. Compared to something like this, the 32" Wega @ $720 is truly a bargain.

Insomniac,
In response to your "wavy flag" issue, have you checked with Radio Shack to see if they sell some kind of in-line filter that you could purchase? Possibly, you're picking up some type of interference. Also, I remember reading through a lot of personal reviews of the Wega in my process of deciding on one and lots of people indicated that the Wega has such a good picture that the TV shows the flaws in a lot of broadcasts. I'm not sure which type of feed you were using (Cable?, Satellite) when you encountered the issue, but I'd look into those as being a potential cause of the problem.

WJE,

Couldn't agree with you any more. Had a very expensive Proscan bought 3 years ago. Repair shop COULD NOT fix it. Period. Also had this annoying humming sound. Prolly interference, but shouldn't a set costing that much work out those issues for me. Personally, I'm waiting for the HDTV's to come out en masse. Yeah, I know that's still a couple years away.

wje: I do not think it is interference. I am using cable. It seems to be a geometry problem. Anything that scrolls horizontally exposes this problem. I've read quite a few people complain of this problem. I will know more on Monday hopefully.

I have a wega tv and i see this problem also...and sometimes when watching football the players' numbers are hard to make out when they are moving because of these effects. But then again that's a cable signal as opposed to those DVD pictures that I am used to seeing that is very beautiful on this set.

Earlier today when I visited a TV store to check out the Wega again (I'm still waiting on my delivery) there was a football game on the TV. The 32" Wega was next to a 32" Toshiba. Both experienced this same issue as you described - blurred numbers when they were running. The Wega was no worse than the Toshiba. I'm not a football fan so I can't comment if this same effect is present on my current 27" Samsung.

yakswak: I have experienced this on DVD as well. On the Matrix during Chapter 12, they show the name of his ship on a plaque. When the camera pans across it, you see it. Also, if you have the Video Essentials DVD, a little after 5 minutes into Title 19, Chapter 1 the camera pans across a stadium. Same thing. I am using Monster 3 Component Video Cable.

I'll have to check that out with the Matrix DVD, but since I don't own it I'll have to borrow it from my lil bro. About the football players' #s I brought that up because on my friend's TV (i think it's just a Sharp), I can clearly read the numbers but I cannot on my TV. But I will say that I absolutely love this TV...I'm not trying to put it down or anything.

Does anyone know how far back are they sending out GC for? I bought a digital camera on the 11/21 (aarrrrghhh) and I wouldn't mind getting a $50 GC.

I have to say that even I though I had my reservations and almost missed out on this deal (initial out of stock), I have to say that I am very happy with my decision. I was able to order my 32" Wega on 11/22/00 (wow, lucky me, another $50) even though I felt at the time (before 7:30pm), I had about 0.5% chance of getting one.

I'll let everyone know when I get my TV if interest still there.

Happy Greetings to all.

I'd recommend that anyone getting a new TV to check out the November 2000 issues of Sound and Vision magazine. The December issue is also out, buy you might be able to find a November issue - possibly at your library. There is a great section in the November issue on how to set your TV up and includes recommendations on some DVD calibration software (Avia and Video Essentials) to aid in this process.

One thing that I found quite interesting is the recommended distance you should sit away from your screen. To achieve this value, take your screen size and multiply it by 3. For example, if you have a 32" screen, then you should be sitting a least 8' away from it. If you have a 36" screen, then 9' is the recommended distance.

I'd be willing to bet that you won't have a chance at the gift certificate - because it was 'slipped' out on 11/22/2000 and amended to 11/23/2000. Those able to produce a screen shot indicating the date of 11/22/2000 in the details section of the incentive are able to get the $50 gift check.

<< 12.5' is the recommended distance(for 36 inches Tv). >>

What, that's too far for me.. That would defeat the purpose of the size of my 36 TV.

Man... those mag. should check their math before they publish. (36" x 3) / 12 = 9 feet.

Actually, the magazine had it right - I was the idiot who should have checked the math. Their example stated the distance for a 50" TV as being 12.5' feet away. For some reason, I thought it was for a 36" TV. My appologies for for any confusion that may have been caused.

On another note, I found a site that has the Sony RM-AV2100 "Universal" remote control with a LCD touch screen. Price: $119 + $8.00 for s/h. The site: HiFi For Less - Remote Controls

Also, E-Cost: E-Cost has a better price on the remote: $109 + $6.70 for UPS Ground shipping for a total of $115.70.

THE GOOD NEWS: EAGLE FREIGHT brought my TV on time per appt.

THE BAD NEWS: I think they must have dropped it on it's head. The two guys delivering it were weaklings. They were struggling with it the whole way to my front door. They had to rest like 3 times, coming up the front walk. They just left it inside the front door and gave me the paperwork to sign. I had a friend here to help me set it in place, so I let those little ^%^&$ run home to mama. Unpackaging it, I find a 3 inch long crack along the top corner on the side. And it's so bad that the whole corner on the front facing is buckled. Anyone else have to call for a replacement for one of these behemoths yet? Since they are out of stock. It will probably be a while, so I'm going to set it up and see if it will work in the interim....*SIGH*

UPDATE:
I called 800.com right away and the CSR was very apolegetic for the awful delivery service. He said they will replace it as soon as they can, they are on order from Sony at the moment. He then said they would try to get one for me even quicker than their stock replenishment order and that he was going to knock more $$$ off my order total for my trouble. That's cool, IF it goes down that way...we'll see.

I have the set on right now and that whole side that it was dropped on has a dark green and red rainbow hue. They completely ruined the picture tube. So I hope I get the replacement quickly, I was so looking forward to watching all my DVD's over again on this set!

Do You live on the first floor? I live on the back of an apartment, three flight up. If someone try to deliver it from the back street, they will have to go down two flight of stair(D*mn hill country), then up three to get to my apartment. I hope the red carpet delivery cover this part. Anyway I was at Sam's warehouse and the box look humongous, it look like it wouldn't fit into my car even if I knock the roof off of it.

The remote Wje mention is at Sam's Warehouse for $130 plus tax.
