I have the 32" FS 12 model and its fine. It might look concaved to some. It did for me at first but now it doesn't.

On picture quality, my cable tv looks very bad on some channels and better on some. Overall, I don't like my cable TV anymore. Might have to get sat TV.

When I view my DVD's, I really like the look and fell of the TV, (the flat screen that is).

Does anyone know the resolution of DVD component output? Is it 480i (480 lines interlaced)?

<< does anyone else notice waves in their tv screen? >>

I'm seeing this with my 32" (FS12) Wega. However, it is only visible on a few of my cable stations - especially those that look like the signal is weaker. I don't see anything like this while playing a DVD, though.

Some thoughts ... questions and something to try:

-Is anyone experiencing this issue with a Satellite connection or Digital cable?

-Has anyone who experienced this problem switched over to the tuner on their VCR to pull the same stations in? If so, was this same problem present?

-Using the tuner on the VCR was recommended in one of my Sound and Vision magazines. Apparently, the tuner in some VCRs may be better than the tuners in some TVs.[/list]

buffboy, How nice of you to make another appearance.

<< yeah wje, just a question, how much was that mitsubishi hdtv, bet not even close to 2000 eh? yeah that's what i thought >>

Actually, the Mitsubishi that I saw was $3,300 or $3,500. I can't recall the exact dimensions of the screen, though. But, it certainly put every other TV in the store to shame. The picture was L-I-Q-U-I-D. As far as the $3,500 goes, that's not much more than you paid (excuse me, your father paid) for the Sony XBR400. If you are going to drop $1,200 more to go to an XBR, what's another $1,200 to go to the Mitsubishi? The $1,200 jump from the XBR400 to the Mitsubishi has more value than the $1,200 jump from a standard Wega to the XBR400.

However, given the constant state of flux in the industry at the moment, I'd be less inclined to spend more than $1,000 on a TV at the moment. Sure, you will have the option of utilizing a digital decoder with your XBR400 to give you a 16:9 HDTV picture on your screen, while I will not have this option with my TV. However, that option may run you $1,000. Instead, I have saved $1,200 by getting a regular Wega. Imagine how much $1,200 + the interest I will accumulate will buy me in 5 years? First of all, I won't have to waste a dime on a digital converter, but will have enough money to buy a *real* digital TV. Plus, I'll have a nice Wega that I'll be able to move up to the bedroom.

Once you get a little more education in your life and some more experience in the real World, what I'm saying will make sense. I only purchase what I can afford. My credit card is utilized like an American Express card - the balance is paid off each month. I don't buy things on credit with the exception of my home - a small 6.5% mortgage and a 0.9% car loan - very little interest do I pay. My wife doesn't need to work. I have 2 dependable vehicles 2 and 4 years old, respectively. My 7-year-old daughter's college is already paid for. Sure, I could easily blow $1,200 more on a TV, but why? I'm quite happy with my newly-acquired home theater system. I have maybe an hour each day to utilize it because of the work I do.

Like I mentioned before, please feel free to post some realistic comments when you have had a little more experience in your life - and you are the one paying your own bills, not your father purchasing you some frivolous gift on a credit card.

Well I received my 32" fs wega today and no problems with delivery. I see that there was clear tape on the box(this is after I read this on the board) and there was no extra packing in the box. I waited for the TV to get to room temp. before I turned it on, my picture is very bent on the left side of screen. This is not so noticeable on cable TV but when you bring up TV guide feature or video game or DVD you see the geometry problem. I feel this is unexceptable due to the fact if I go to a electronics store to purchase a TV and want a 32" and on the lowest end it sells for $400 and on the high end it sells for $1200... If I purchase the higher costing one I expect perfection. I also purchased the Avia DVD and Video Essentials at Buy.com for $59.00 for both shipped. I also notice on the left side of my screen where its bent down, at the top of screen edge is a green line and a red line. I will call 800.com to notify them about this problem. But I will also call Sony service to come and fix geometry problem. I would like to know guys if having this fixed will take care of this problem or should I go through the hassle of returning this. What I'm asking is this something that a service man can fix with some minor adjustments in the back of the TV or is the only way to get a new TV to get best satisfaction. This of course will be stressful to say the least to me. And I am anal about a perfect picture.

RuNok,

The problem you described doesn't sound too good. I hope that either Sony or 800.Com will get this resolved for you. Please keep us posted.

I have gone through troubleshooting using other tuners (VCR and my Digital Cable box) and the problem is not with the SOny Tuner (happens with other sources as well).

Techin' till I die: I'm sorry, I was being sarcastic. I've been talking about the problem for almost two weeks with out anyone else having the problem, then it seemed all at once a few other people noticed it. Did you see the problem at the B&M stores?

Crazybubba: The component outpu depends on your DVD player. If it is a progressive scan model it outputs 480p, otherwise it outputs 480i. If I'm not mistaken, the only resolution that works on these TVs is 480i.

wje: I'll try a VCR, but I think it is the TV because I see it from DVDs too.

RuNok: It will be your choice. You can call Sony and they will send someone out to your house to look at your TV. They will fix ot if they can at no cost to you. Or you can send oit back to 800.com and hope you get a good set the second time around.

Insomniac, I'm almost positive that my DVD outputs at 480i via component video. But, I don't know the maximum resolution that the Wega TV can output. I see some TV's listed at 900 or 750 or 600 lines of resolution. For Wega, its doesn't apply for some reason, maybe b/c its a vertical line (trinitron) technology and not shahow mask.

Even though the Wega's aren't HDTV. One thing, they aren't 16:9 format. But can they get almost 920/1080i/p HDTV qaulity with a seperate receiver/decoder and component video? Also, enabling 16:9 compression will in effect give you teh 16:9 screen.

whew!...how much longer can this thread go?

I don't have a TV yet, but this sounds like a good deal. I'm saving my money for a 21" Monitor then use the TV tuner card on my PC. I heard that has better quality then a regular TV?

Has anyone attempted to find out whether these Wega units are "old stock" that Sony is moving out? Seeing as how this was an issue with earlier units manufactured by Sony (1998) in an earlier post above, it's not unrealistic to wonder if the "good deal" we got wasn't actually Sony clearing-out leftover units built prior to their "fixing" the geometry problem.

Could those of you both with and without the problem search the back of your Wega units for a "manufacture date" and post to this thread? Something to the order of:

Model: (KV32FS16 - 32" PIP)

Problem: (geometry distortion)

Manufacture Date: (1998)

It kind of seems that the "trend" is problems with the 32" non-PIP units (KV32FS12). How about using the following terms to described the problems, so we're all talking from the same level:
- no problem
- geometry distortion (all video sources)
- geometry distortion (internal tuner only)
- poor color balance
- fuzzy images (Texas residents only):Q

sorry, couldn't resist that last one....

Has anyone ordered a tv stand from 800.com? I ordered mine on Tuesday Night. It came today (Thursday) via UPS, . It took bascially one day since I ordered in the evening. Are they shipping these via overnight?

to K-sqaured,

I purchased the KV32FS12 (non PIP) model on 11/22. My manufacture date is November 2000 and made in Mexico. It appears that I received the tv less than 1 month after it was made.

I have no problems at all but I read that the waves seen on stock tickers are normal and seen in a great deal of wegas. the others I'm not sure. Just do a search on google on wega picture quaility.

I'm getting my 2nd 32" PIP tomorrow from 800.com, since Eagle Freight dropped my first one on it's head. The one that was dropped still works, but has major discoloration on the tube and has a dented and cracked case. This first one I have right now was made in October 2000.
I'm watching CNBC right now. Are you all watching the ticker tape and noticing that near both edges of the TV, the ticker seems to be hitting a bump and going around it slightly? If this is the geometry problem, I don't care about that. It's barely noticeable. I can still read the ticker perfectly. I want to see that part of the Matrix someone mention seeing this effect on also. Something about the sign on their space ship. What chapter was that again?

Like CrazyBubba, I have the 32" non-PIP model. The manufacturing date was also November 2000.

geoffkin: That is what we are talking about. You see it anytime something moves horizontally across the screen. I have other small problems like the top inch of the screen bends toward the center on both sides and a stripe across the top than goes through the color spectrum.

I believe it was somewhere around Chapter 12. I'll look for the exact time right now.

Just take a look. My was manufacture in Oct. 2000. It is 36FS16 model. BTW, when I first hooked it up, the picture on the bottom curves a little bit. When into set-up and adjust the title angle to +1. Now it looks perfect.

I just wanted to let y'all know about a great remote control that I purchased today @ Sears for $24.99 - this is their regular price. The remote control is the One For All Cinema 7 with learning capabilities. I've included some links below so that you can get the most out of this remote:

Revised Manual for the Cinema 7 Remote

Remotecentral.Com - Reviews and Forum for Remote Controls

One For All Cinema 7 - FAQ

This remote is simply amazing. I currently have my Wega, JVC receiver, JVC 200 disc changer and Toshiba DVD player running off this one remote. Most of the Wega commands were recognized when I utilized the standard Sony code '0000'. A few of the menu commands had to be 'learned' from my current Wega remot. For the Toshiba 1600 DVD player, only the on / off switch was recognized, so I had to teach the remote some of the commands. This remote features 2 macro buttons, too! With these, you can record macros so that all of your components will be turned off by pressing one button. Some of the reviews for this remote pointed out that it has limited memory for storing custom commands. However, I've nearly completed the process of setting it up and, so far, have not run out of memory.

Wal-Mart is also supposed to have this remote - according to some reviews. However, I stopped by 2 Wal-Mart stores and they only had the lower-end One For All remotes and not the Cinema 7.

I'm almost more excited about this remote than the Wega itself!! Now, my 5 other remote controls can just stay in the drawer while I utilize this one! Enjoy!

geoffkin: To be exact, Chapter 11 at 38:06. If you're so Inclined, you can pause it, then frame step to the first fram, hit A-B repeat, step to the first frame after the sign and hit A-B repeat again. I did that for the Sony tech. The sign only pans for 2 seconds.

My manufacture date was October 2000 for 32FS16. I have the geometry problems. If you switch to your DVD player and 16:9 enhanced mode, then just hit stop (I just get a blue screen), you can see where the blue meets the black, that the line is not straight. On my TV from right-to-left, assuming the right most point is where it should be. the line goes up then comes down to normal near the center of the TV and dips below normal and then goes back to normal as it gets closer to the left edge. I can see this from about 10 feet away.

wje: I am going to get the Philips Pronto remote. I can't wait.

I called today 800.com and spoke with Paul(product specialist) he said that they would not be in stock until the end of Dec. and that if a new unit was what I wanted that they would contact me when they come in. This conversation was a 10:00am today. When I got home from work tonight I went to there web site to find that all models are in stock. I thought "what gives" so I called and spoke this time to another product specialist. He said yes they are all in stock and at there Delaware warehouse was the 32FS16. I originaly ordered, and have here at my home, the 32FS12 but asked to go to the 32FS16 because I've read that they have less geometry problems. Who knows if thats true but I was also given the option to receive $200 dollars more off the TV I have now to keep it and rely on service techs from sony service to fix it. Or to get a new set and get a PIP model instead. So I went with the later. I'm anal, I know many would have taken the money. The reason I went with the 32FS16 also was that its closer to my home then the west coast warehouse which stocks the 32FS12's and I want it for the holidays. I have to say that 800.com is really good about keeping there costumers happy and I will be doing way more buying with them. All store should be like them. I hope the next one comes alright. I have read alot that says when we purchase a TV we really should have a specialist come and recalibrate the settings from the factory at the time of purchase. This would be free since its under warranty. This geometry problem is known by sony, they call it left shoulder drop. This problem has something to do with the yoke in the back of the tube. This is a good reason for some of you who are not as anal as myself to really look at your set and if you have the left shoulder drop to think about exchanging it.

Hi. Im new, and I missed out on this deal. DOH! Anyway, I won a PS2 and I am selling it for $550. Best time to buy a new TV. With the money I was going to buy a 27" Wega. But I have read all your posts about the problems. Does anyone know if this happens on the 27" also? Or is it a 32" problem?

Thanks, And I love the forum!

Speaking of the Playstation, Sony had some problems with that too I remember reading with horizontal lines...

Games like Madden2k1 when scrolled to the side during the intro or such you were able to see the picture jump a tad bit...

Sounds like the same guys who worked on the PS2 were putting some overtime working on the Wega's...
