We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an ?elite? experience, which is why we include an internal hard drive and HDMI output in every PS3 we sell, along with the 50 GB of storage capacity on a high definition Blu-ray disc. Sony has been the strongest advocate of high definition as the future of next-generation gaming. This requires high-definition components, including HDMI output, and large storage devices to deliver and store all that rich and vivid HD content. Microsoft?s announcement today not only legitimizes Sony?s PS3 strategy, it moves us closer to adopting universal standards in the area of high definition gaming that will benefit game developers and ultimately the end user.

It's from yesterday but it was the first time I saw it. I actually agree with them however.

<ms fanboy>But.....at least microsoft included an HDMI cable!!! </ms fanboy>

I buy all of my systems the first time they come out and I don't have a need for a black 360.

lol, I found that interview hilarious. what happened to choice?
the MS PR guy that did the interview said something like HDMI cable is worth 50 bucks. I hope they're monster cables, cuz as we already know monoprice has them for less than 10 bucks each.

if they're worth 50 bucks, they should ship without cables and reduce the price by 50. let the user determine the quality of the cables!

Is the elite going to solve the heat issues the regular 360 has been having? If so I'd actually jump on getting one.

I admit I think it's cool that they are including an HDMI cable in the box, because finding a reasonably priced one for my PS3 in a BnM store. I asked and was naturally lead to where they all cost $50, but after wandering around for a while I found one for less than $20.

Funny how the MS PR guy calls the Elite "future proof" when that's what they said about the original 360 (back when they were claiming HDMI and 1080p were not needed).

Nothing has changed for heat issue unfortunately... as for HDMI cables monoprice FTW.

Perhaps I'm just an HD noob, but what is supposed to be so great about the HDMI support, other than the convenience of having video and audio on a single cable? My component hookups seem to work just fine.

Now you can pay more money for system failure? AWESOME!

Can't get 1080p via component cables (only a handful of HDTVs accept 1080p input via component).

Audio on HDMI 1.3 is better as well.

Other than that, doesn't really matter.

MS should have announced the Elite at $400 and dropped the Premium down to $300 and dropped or killed off the Core.

It's a digital connection. It's the difference between VGA and DVI.

There's nothing wrong, other then Sony isn't doing anything at all. Basically Microsoft just took out one of the PS3's most significant advantages over the XBox 360, and all Sony does is make a PR about how they were first.

But I guess Sony fanboys are jumping for joy for getting absolutly nothing I guess

And I can use the same component cable from PS2 (and PS1 for that matter).

Does anyone really know that for a fact? It wouldn't surprise me if a 80nm or even a 65nm shrink of the cpu or gpu were also developed for the xbox 360 at this time. It seems like all the third party fab companies are starting to sell 65nm as a normal product offering now.

Least we have more choices now on the 360 side. While I think they should nuke the Core system, it at least gives people options. If Sony could really know what consumers were thinking, they'd be #1 right now, instead of having PS3's gathering dust in every electronics store across the U.S.

no...they are just pointing out that sony was pushing for all this HD stuff from the beginning while MS was saying its just a gimmick and now MS is doing the same thing sony was..

I knew about Monoprice, but I wanted my cable then and was willing to pay more than Monoprice for it, but not $50. And it is kind of nice that the older cables for PS2/One still work with the PS3.

But I'm VERY disappointed by them not solving the heat issue. I haven't been around a 360 that hasn't been locked in a plastic box, but my friends who have them complain about how loud the thing tends to be. None of them have had the 360 die on them yet though, but I'm going to hold off on getting one until they can solve the issues they seem to have.

The thing that's holding me back from getting a 360 is that it's crap hardware. Not only the heat thing, it's that you need a giant brick to power it as well. Both the unit and the brick get hot and have fans that make a lot of noise. If you setup the console with the WiFi adapter and HD-DVD player, it's a pretty unsightly mess and ends up costing you more than the PS3.

I like the fact that the 360 gives you freedom of choice, but the way the engineered the addon components sucks.

You know they actually announced this 7 or 8 hours before the announcement from MS. Personally, I don't agree with ****** Sony says we have heard all the spin before .

having more choices is a great concept, but only if it's applied such that the basic platform doesn't change in capabilities over time.

one of the basic tenets of owning and developing for a console is that there is some standard set of features that reliably withstands an entire "generation" of gaming. Otherwise you have the same hodgepodge of capabilities in PCs, with component halflifes of ~6 months.

hardware add ons to consoles that fundamentally change the capabilities of the system, divide their own user base. network gaming with the ethernet add on never really took off on the ps2. eyetoy? lmao.. let's not forget about genesis's miserable failures, 32x and sega hd dvd, *cough* i mean sega cd, add on.

due to MS's lack of foresight, core users are "forced" to upgrade in order to play the same array of games regular 360 people can, with the recent 64MB limit cap broken. ok, fine, you have a "choice" to upgrade, but let's face it, that's just PR spin on their ineptitude.

Actually, the WiFi adapter is one of the least unsightly add-ons I've ever seen. It clips on to the back and is barely noticeable. You don't even have to put the antenna up more often than not.

Won't disagree about the HD DVD drive though.

Uh, ... they say they include a hard drive with every purchase. So does the 360??! WTF. They also have a large and small hard drive option. I don't get their point.

If I were them I'd be heavily pushing the fact that for $20 more you can get a high def dvd player with the PS3.
