1) compaq x1000
2) toshiba (p-25-s507) --- not sure if this series comes with centrino but i am sooo falling for its screen size
3) IBM T4x series (added it after reading posts on anand tech )
4) dell - if they are value for money.

I am ready to shell out upto 1800$ provided i get value for that money .

I have an R40 with 15". Its not bad, but you might wanna check the R50. Its a bit more affordable than a T41, but of course as a thinkpad still carries a premium.
Other than that, the Compaq and Toshiba seem alright too, and I've heard decent things about them. Dell.. Well, I know they have got some decent machines, but I can't recommend them because of their poor customer service. Also I find that their Inspiron line are pretty ugly.

Goodluck on your purchase.

Ok, let's start off with my usual response to get the ball rolling here on some real discussion that matters. What will you be using it for?

Well thank you all who replied to my message . ..

Well i would be using my laptop for everything except gaming .... i am a software pro and hence i would be installing linux and heavy softwares like IBM websphere on it ...

Would certainly love a laptop which is linux friendly ...

And 1 more question do we have a latop which allows USB booting ????

I don't even know if we have machines to support USB device booting ... would be very handy if i can find one .

Thanks in advance

Well if you are using it for everything but gaming, I would go for a display you can be happy with and a good keyboard. As far as the Toshiba you can toss that one if you are wanting to spend $1800, and there is no Centrino. The T40 is going to put you @ $2050 if you get 512 RAM, which for your programs I would highly suggest. For Dell your choices are the 600m and the Inspiron 8600 if you want Centrino. Of the two I would go with the 600M since you won't be gaming, and you can get 512 MB or RAM and upgrade the HD right now to 40GB and come in at $1869. The 600M's build quality is the better of the two anyway, and it is much more portable.
Another one you have not thought of is the Sager NP3750. This machine is a little bigger than the 600M @ 6+ lbs versus 4+, but IMO it's not a deal breaker. The way I configured it was, 15.4" WXGA, 1.6 M ,DVD/CDRW and 512RAM (1DIMM so you can upgrade to 1GB w/o replacing both chips), and of course at your request Centrino. This puts you right at $1825 and the build quality is definately there.
The Compaq equipped like above will be $1724 out of pocket with a 100 rebate right now. The Sager is a higher quality, but the Compaq does have the 64MB 9200 vid card, wich is no benefit to you unless you decide to pick up gaming in the future. You will hear alot of happy campers with the X1000, so I suspect Compaq has picked up the quality aspect, but they still have a way to go to catch Dell and Sager.
