I just put together a computer for my daughter to play her games on, but the sound card isn't working on it. I am using a Sound Blaster AWE64 with OS Win 98se. I have downloaded the drivers from Creative, and the sound card is still not producing any results.... what am I doing wrong?????

So the drivers installed alright... did you restart the computer after they installed?

Are you sure you have the speakers hooked up to the right output jack of the card?

Does the motherboard have integrated audio? If it does, maybe that's set as default?

Yes, it does see it in the device manager, and there are not any problems with it, the card was working just fine before I formatted the drive... the speakers work... checked those a minute ago, and everything seems to be in place, just no sound.

It's not something silly like windows volume down or muted or anything, is it?

LOL, I actually checked that just to be sure... starting to feel stupid right about now. But the volume had nothing to do with it.

I don't even have the sounds of Windows loading, these are just default sounds that you would hear say if you closed or min. your explorer window. There are no sounds from the computer at all.

does the card have a control program? Have you checked to make sure the volume on all that stuff is ok? have you checked wav volume in addition to master volume?

are you sure you got the right drivers for it?

wav volume is fine, on high actually, the sound card is old enough that win 98 actually has the driver for it, but just for good measure i downloaded and installed the one that creative had on thier site.

1. Try this goto control panel, multimedia and see if the audio card is listed under the audio tab (preferred device listing) if so select the card awe64 and see if you now have sound.
I have never used an awe64 but did use the awe32 and if I remember correctly you may have to check the jumpers on the card or just note the current settings. The dma, irq channels are of the utmost importance 5,1,5 are good setting or if issues occur try 7,1,3
Should you have any other questions refer to creatives web site by clicking the link. That maybe plug and play and win98se should have detected the card and installed the correct drivers. On the second link awe64 is plug and play.

2. Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Select the Device Manager tab. Click the plus sign next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Ensure that the sound card is listed properly. There should be no yellow exclamation marks (!), question marks (?) or red "X" marks next to any of the entries for the sound card. If there are any present, then I recommend you un-install and re-install the drivers for the sound card.

what kind of speakers are you plugging in? Some speakers need batteries if they are desktop speakers. Do you have a headset that you could plug in to see if the output is working? Earphones?

AWE 64 and Win98 was a finicky combination. Congrats on getting it working. I saw more than a few Windows Protection Faults from AWE 64 cards due to IRQ conflicts.

Oh duh, IRQ stuff... I didn't think of that since I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Glad to hear you got it going Dude (in a unisex kind of was meaning cool person)!
