Does anyone know where you can buy the 1/8 to 3/8 inch thich sheets of sound deadening material? I was thinking of lining the side and top panels of my case with the material to reduce noise.

does the smell go away after a while or is it something you just live with. Did you try this an if so did it work for you?

I just read several articles on Dynamat. I think I will try to control the sound in other ways such as replace the fan in the power supply and maybe some acoustical foam placed behind the tower. The articles mentioned the insulation factor and I don't want to heat the case up until I have tried everything else.

Thanks for the input.

I have not tried this myself, in a computer that is. A friend and I put some of this stuff inside the door of his car.

I wouldn't mess around with the fan in the power supply if I were you. That can be risky and a power supply fan(s) are not loud. If you have extra case fans you can buy quiter fans to replace those.

Dynamat is meant to reduce vibrations more than it is to reduce noise. I used some Dynamat in my car, and it works well. I have no idea how well it will do reducing noise. Plus there's the issue of isulating your case causing to heat up.

Power supply fans are not loud?! For just about every single system I've had, the power supply fan was the biggest source of noise. This is even more noticeable when the system goes in standby and everything stops except the PS fan.

I have heard the Panaflo's are good to replace the PS fan with. What's your opinion?

I find my case fans are much louder than my power supply.
And what does this mean? - "This is even more noticeable when the system goes in standby and everything stops except the PS fan."

Um yeah, I bet it is more noticeable....since everything else is on standby and stops running.

Ummm.... Dynomat as an isulation can cause your sys to heat up if you let the heat stay in there. Or it can be a great insulation to trap cold air. Member insulation can be used for both. Just make sure you have good airflow and a well thought out fan placement with (as close as posable) egual amounts of air goin in as goin out. Dynomat is great for sound deadening, as it creates rigidity to help reduce case vibrations but also helps to create a presure berrier for sound so it cant escape. The draw backs are weight. the smell leaves after its had ample time to cool off after aplication

substitute 'obvious' for 'noticeable' Imperium97 and I think you will get marcio's intent

you can replace the psu fan if you want, it isn't too difficult. or you could just get a psu with quiet fans. i have an enermax EG651P-VE and i can hardly hear the thing running.

I run the generic version of this stuff in my system and I can say that I dont smell it at all.

Also that I have good airflow so I don't get any heat buildup.

I will also say that for all the work it takes, it didn't reduce the noise that much at all,
you see I still hear the fan in front as there is nothing between me and the fan...gotta have a hole...

I'm not taking it out, but it really wasn't worth it.
Don't know until ya try...ya know.

Check my system in my sig if ya want...

like papasmurf said... dynamat will reduce VIBRATION noise, not ACCUSTIC noise. the best way to quiet the case, IMO, is to get high quaility silent fans. if they are still too loud, you may want to consider running the fans into a bay bus so when you do not need the fans at full voltage, bump them down to 7 volts. i do this and it works wonders considering my case only really heats up when i am gaming.

The baybus trick is a nice feature to add for fans. What I would do is use the dynomat on the places that need em. Put a strip on each large panel. Cut like a 2"X8" strip and put it near the middle. What it does is adds weight to the panels that resonate(spelling?) I done this and it seems to help some, not alot although i didnt hear much vibration before.

The best way as others have pointed out is to get quiter fans.

Are Taisols quiet?? I am using the Alpha PAL35 w/ Sanyo Fan (quietest fan available) and the sound annoys me :|:|. My case fans arent a problem at all, as they are as silent as fans get.

EDIT: Hardwareaddicted did you cover dynomat on BOTH sides of the case completely?
