Sound/Headset issue

I've had that problem before, and now it's back, I think it came back since I installed a new audio drivers. The thing is I really don't remember what I had done to fix it. So the problem is concerning my microphone (or in fact the whole headset), which itself is part of an headset, with two wires, one ends in black, the other ends in pink (or very pale red), the pink end is the input I think. By the way my sound card is mentioned in my signature, and this is for Windows XP SP3 32-Bit.

So the actual problem is that whenever I speak in my headset's microphone, or whenever I just touch the actual headset (anywhere) then the resulting spoken words or sounds are played through (and are amplified a lot) my regular Altec Lansing speakers. I'm not sure if that was clear enough. In other words it's as if my system was constantly recording whatever comes from my headset, whether it is my voice in the microphone or sounds caused by me just touching the headset, and the sounds/voice are amplified a lot, I'd just whisper "test" in my microphone for example and then my voice is played about five times louder in my regular speakers and it causes lots of crackling and my sub-woofer doesn't like that either.

Normally, before I installed the new audio drivers at least, then when I spoke in the microphone I could only hear what I said if for example I clicked on "test microphone" from in-game menus, and the voice wasn't amplified by ten or so, there was no crackling, no nothing, it worked well. And I do know that this issue is not related to the actual audio drivers themselves, simply because as I mentioned here, I've had this very issue in the past, way before I installed the new drivers, the problem is I don't remember what I've done back then to fix it, but I did fixed it. In my Windows Audio panel, when I uncheck the box under "Microphone" then of course the problem mentioned above stops, but a new problem arises, which is (and you probably guessed) that the Microphone doesn't work anymore, so if I play games and I want to use voice communication, it doesn't work, since I unchecked that box.

But if I do check the box then as I said it is as if there would be a constant recording from the headset. As I type this, for another example, if I just gently hit on the headset, anywhere, just hitting it gently, then my speakers play a "boom", as if I was hitting a drum, and I'm in the Desktop, not playing a game at all. I can't remember what is the cause of such a problem and what I did before to fix it. I'm not sure what else I could say to try to describe my problem. Any suggestions guys?

EDIT: Here a picture of my audio card the where the wires are plugged (I've rotated the picture to show how it is physically installed in my case right now, as if you looked at it from behind of my case of course): http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/7352/apujj5.png

The black-end and red/pink-end wires are both from my headset, and the green-end wire comes from my Altec Lansing speakers. Please note that it was all plugged like this before I installed the new drivers, and to repeat myself again, note that I did not experience this issue for a very long time with the wires plugged this way, so I don't think that changing them would fix anything.

There might be an 'advanced button' under the 'Mic In' volume control in windows, and there might be a 'Microphone Boost' box under the 'Advanced Controls for Mic Volume' which you should uncheck.

It was already unchecked.

And as I said, the problem isn't only that the sounds are amplified, but that it plays constantly, as if I had my finger pressing a record button non-stop, just being in the Desktop doing nothing, no recording programs are open, whatever happens on and from the headset is played through my speakers, right now the only way to stop it is either to uncheck the microphone box or to physically unplug the headset's pink-end wire from my sound card.

A little update, I've found a way to stop the sounds and voices constantly playing through the speakers, so that's one less thing to think about. But I still have a problem. Now my microphone works, but the sound is horribly amplified, and I don't know why. The sound amplification box under the advanced microphone priorities is unchecked, and nothing is amplified or no options about sound amplification is selected in my creative audio options panel. Any idea what's going on?

So, anyone?

Indeed, the microphone feedback is still way too amplified/loud, I can't figure out how to fix it.

It surely is a peculiar problem...

I have had pretty similar microphone problems to you before, and all I can say is that the fix has always been very simple and sitting in front of my nose.

Do you use any other programs besides the windows defaults for sound amplification? Did the installation of the new drivers load any new programs?

Is it possible that the new sound drivers are just that much louder? and you have to turn down accordingly? I had speakers that were stupidly loud at some point and I had to creak them MAYBE 1/50th of the volume thing and they were a good level.

Well yes the audio drivers do install an audio panel for separate audio options by Creative, but there's absolutely no options within that panel where it says "amplification" that is currently activated, the one place I know where it allows you to amplify sound is the EAX Effects amplifier (for example adding +4.0db to the EAX effects, or more). And then there's the usual main volume adjustments which I haven't touched at all.

The thing is the last drivers also installed that Creative panel, and I also had that problem one day back then with that previous driver as I mentioned in my previous posts. And then eventually, and I don't remember how, I fixed all my problems. Now that I've updated the drivers it's as if something came back at default and is causing the problems again, but I don't know what it is. Is it just one or two boxes which I should uncheck or check? Is it some sliders somewhere which I need to play with that I'm not aware of? I don't know, I can't remember.

Additionally, of course, I've tried to simply decrease the microphone volume sliders and see if it helps, but it doesn't, wherever the slider goes the sounds are horribly amplified, you know, as if I was literally talking with the microphone inside of my lungs, lots of "air" is pushed, I mean it sounds like that, sounds like a drum the size of my country, just whispering "testing" about 10 centimeters away from the microphone makes my sub-woofer and speakers say "TEEEEEEESTIIIIIING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". I don't get it. One thing I haven't tried yet but will certainly try is to simply revert back to the previous drivers and see if it helps... maybe, indeed, maybe that the new drivers have all its feedback settings screwed up or something.

Ok, well I tried the previous drivers (2.16.0008), but I still had the exact same problem. I'm back to the newest ones (2.18.0004) for the sake of being up to date, since everything else works fine, it's just the microphone's sound "amplification" that's causing me issues. It's not technically something too dramatic, I don't use it in all my games, but when playing TF2 or BF2 or NS not having it is quite a disadvantage for team work and giving my teammates general information. If I do use it now I might just end up getting muted or else their speakers will suffer greatly.
