I am looking for stuff to line my Antec 1030 so that it can be as silent as possible. I know dynomat is the best stuff out there, but I am looking for something cheap.

Any suggestions to what others have done?

Thanks!

I've tried lining my case with felt from a craft store, didn't do much.
Also tried to put thick package sealing tape to line the side panels, didn't help much there.
I have alot of mousepads, and I tried to tape those along the inside case, it got a few degress hotter, and I didn't notice any noise drop.
The noise of the fans are just too hard to absorb for most materials.

It's very hard to muffle sound. It's better to not have the sound in the first place. If it is vibrations, rubber washers or grommets on the vibrating parts (ie fans) help. Anything heavy inside the case will help dampen vibrations. You can go to Kmart and pick up a rubber doormat, it might work.

If it's fan noise, it's trickier. You need something plush to absorb the sound. If eggcrate foam didn't work, you may need to buy quieter fans. If you do go with a dampening/absorbing material, you have to stick it everywhere, not just the case sides. Sound is omnidirectional!

But as you can see, even with those expensive stuff like Akasa or Dynamat, things don't always work out so well.

Dynamat (but this guy got better results)

I have read on other forums that some people used extra mouse pads, cork, and one guy even bought a few rubber door mats and cut those to fit in the case...what ever you find to use..post its results

I just sound insulated with homemade "Magic Fleece" which is really only a cork and carpet sandwich. The results are excellent. I can just barely hear the hard drives if the radio is off. I also have a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 400, a Silverado hsf, and 4 80mm Silencer fans from PC P&C.

I got pics here.

Hmm, your technique and idea is brilliant! However, since you already have some super-quiet components, I would guess that the use of the cork/carpet fleece wasn't the major factor in making your system quiet.

But, for future reference, when you mean carpet scrap, I assume you mean just bits of unused wall to wall carpet you had lying around?

Yes, I had pieces of carpet laying around. What I used is a thinner carpet called wall carpet, made to put on walls and display cabinets. Check out carpet shops for remnants. A nice Burber would look good too. I would not use a shag carpet, too 1960's.
Soundfold Excalibur wall carpet looks like the stuff I used.

When you start getting a quiet system the hdd's seem to get louder and louder because the other noises are no longer masking their whine. The sound proofing really quiets them down.
