Sound problem with SB Audigy and Tyan Tiger MP

I am having a sound problem that's been driving me nuts. When I boot up, the sound is fine, but when I start playing mp3s eventually the sound just stops playing. Sometimes, if I let the computer sit, the sound just doesn't work anymore. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card, installed the latest drivers and BIOS and I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

Specs. on the system are:
mobo: Tyan Tiger MP
RAM: 512MB registered SDRAM
Dual Athlon XP-1700 processors
sound card: SB Audigy OEM.
OS: Windows 2000 Pro

It's in PCI Slot-2, I think (2 pci slots below the AGP slot)
