i NEED a new speaker setup. im looking at the 641 series with altec lansing. there is the 2.1 or the 4.1 (surround sound *drools*) what do you guys think of either of them. if they are good, then is it worth it spending the extra bucks to get the 4.1, or should i just stick with the 2.1??? i tested the system out at a friend's house and it sounded good, but i want to make sure its my best bang for the buck. my range is anywhere up to about $150 (still need money for my new nec and chair!!!) where do you think i should buy my speakers, is it important to buy from a reliable source to make sure to get a quality product??

thanks for your input,
wattage hungry pc gamer

I'm running Altec Lansing 4100s. They are nice.

The Logitech Z640 5.1 system is very nice too and only $67 at Newegg.

wow, responded to BOTH of my posts amish...that is electric. anyways, they are nice, sure, but the real question is: how nice??? i mean, i want tight a$$ quality speakers. the 641 have mylar tweeters which may or may not make that big of a difference, maybe just marketing hype. ill check them out if you really think that they are worth my time, but otherwise, im not sure at the moment, money is an issue, but i dont want to get half-ass quality speakers and then have to upgrade a second time. y'know what i mean???

I'm not much of an audiophile, so I might not be the best source of info. I just know that they sound good to me.

Most of logitechs speakers are not that great. There not bad, but in my opinion they are a rip off. The only good set they sell is the z-680, but they are preaty expensive for what you get. dont get me wrong, Logitechs a great company, for mice, keyboards, joysticks, and game pads. Just not speakers. In my opinion it is better to go with a company that invests all of there enegy into making good speakers and then when you need a tight mouse go get a logitech mx700. Altec lansings are great speakers as our klipsch. In my opinion these 2 make the best speakers aveilable. although in the higher end cambrige soundwoks makes a nice 6.1 system sold under creatives brand name. However, i would probably get the klipsche 6.1 system over that. If i was rich hehe.

Bose > Klipsch

Mmm... Bose... surround sound.. *drool*

Unfortunately, the only speakers I've seen from Bose (for a desktop) are those tiny stereo speakers that retail for $99 (saw em at Best Buy).

As far as Altec Lansing speakers go: ~ a year and a half ago I picked up the ATP5 system (now ATP4), and I've been using them on my PC since, and they still sound great in both games and for music. The treble, if you set it too high it can crackle a little (but I've only heard it in one game, so maybe it's the game). Other than that though, the bass is nice, it's not too hard and there's no distortion at all from what I've heard thus far... and aside from the thing with the game, the mids and highs are the same. Only paid $180 for em too.. don't know what they cost now though.

The only downside to those speakers is that with the digital connection, you only get stereo.. unless your sound card has two digital connections. ...I'm forced to use analog connections =/

I know it's not for the model u asked about, but I thought I'd try and help...
