I've seen a few people say that this isn't a true Live card and uses a crippled sound processor, requiring CPU for sound effects processing, making it not much improvement over onboard sound. I'm thinking maybe they were confusing it with the usb external Live. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Why oh why would you use one? Only a touch better than old onboard sound and worse than current gen HD isn't it?

Two Reasons
1. Its better than my onboard sound.

Why would you use anything except the absolute best? In real life we balance costs versus benefits and try to choose what we actually need instead just whatever is the current object of hype. Going on sale for $5 after rebate at compusa. Supports EAX HD. I just want decent headphone sound for games, if I'm watching a movie or listening to music I'll use the real stereo.

exactally

So does onboard , i'd expect even the stuff on 939 boards to give a live a run for it's money.

meh, for $20 it provides a noticable difference in quality and volume over on-board.

Does anyone know the answer to my question? Does the 24 bit SBLive! have an adequate chip or is it a crippled version that relies on the CPU for actual audio processing?

stop worrying. any half decent card for years now has been good enough unless you spend hundreds of dollars on premium headphones and amps or even more for speakers.

for the money you are NOT going to get a chip that will rival that of a $100 sound card!!
If that is what you are looking for the answer is NO!!

But I will tell you that most modern sound cards do not rely on the CPU for actual audio cound processing(including the card you are talking about!)!!

Wow, I can't believe you just said that. Sure, for gaming you need some extra features that only certain cards can deliever. But for music, the Envy24 chipset found on the Chaintech AV710 can easily rival any $100 soundcard. The sound quality the AV710 can deliver for a mere $20 price tag is amazing.

Actually I could have been more specific.

gaming us a whole different story..

Also the time is coming when you won`t need to purchase a soundcard for your PC.

My next sound card is going to be a Auzentech sound cards....
