i need a cheap ( if not free from scrounging around, as close to free as i can get) way to make the 60mm delta fan in my case more tolerable...

the first thing to cross my mind was eggcrate foam... .. or any kind of flat foam... like the kind used for carpet padding or bed padding... the only thing i thought mite be a problem is heat.. but i have plent of airflow i think.. and a steel case was never great for distributing heat in the first place

i just wanted to get some thoughts from anyone before i act on this

Why not replace the 60mm fan with an 80mm fan first you can always get an adapter so an 80mm fan will fit on your heatsink. It'll definately make your system quieter. I used some dynamat (used in cars) in my case but it's been in my system for such a long time I can't remember if it made any major difference.

Newegg has some sound damping material for sale for 19.99. It's some sort of foam material.

Try using a 60-80mm adapter and a spare case fan. Adapters are available for $5-10 online if you shop around a little. If you don't mind spending a couple of bucks, buy a 80mm-compatible heatsink like Thermalright's AX7, and a quiet fan like Panaflo or Silencer.

Also, I think Nexfan.net has PAXMATE acoustic foam kits for $10 +$5 shipping

If you don't mind spending some quality time with a soldering iron, you could always put a couple of diodes in series with the Delta's power.

The actual case material was never meant to conduct/radiate heat. Its simply meant as an enclosure for your hardware components, and good ones will not restrict airflow, but rather channel then to specific routes. If you touch your case, it shouldn't be hot, or even warm, unless you're doing something wrong. So, don't worry about putting foam all over the case. As long as you don't cover up the vents, and have good airflow maintained within the case, you should be fine.

I'm with kyoshozx. Try to get rid of the fan. I've used the Pax Mate and it might make a small difference, but not a big one.
