A native American was arrested in connection with a shooting. The hotels owner said she is banning all Native Americans because...

"The problem is we do not know the nice ones from the bad Natives."

So local tribal leaders are invoking their 1886 treaty card and attempting to have their business license revoked.

The owner of a South Dakota hotel said she was banning Native people. Tribal leaders quickly issued the hotel a trespassing notice, citing an 1868 treaty. (msn.com)

I make an annual pilgrimage from Washington state to Michigan to visit family. If the weather is decent, I take 94, and avoid 90 as SD is a shithole...there is a reason that stretch of the interstate is littered with signage about suicide prevention, drug addiction counselling, and military recruitment. The rural and urban areas along I-29 from Sioux Falls to Sioux City are equally horrific.

I remember when Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed into law a policy that authorizes state law enforcement officials to stop anyone and ask for proof if they’re in the state legally. A reporter asked her, "what does an illegal immigrant look like?

And she was "smart" enough to duck the question?

These days she would have spoken right up without hesitation.

Jan Brewer Has a Nonsense Explanation of Why She Uses the Phrase "Illegal Immigrants" (Phoenix New Times ~ 2013)

"Defending her use of the phrase "illegal immigrants," Governor Jan Brewer explained recently that doing something illegal makes you "an illegal."

We'll note that driving under the influence after a couple of glasses of scotch and rear-ending a minivan must not be illegal, or else Arizona apparently has "an illegal" for governor."

Don't give DeSantis or Abbott any new ideas.

If you are staying near Rapid City, stay at the hotel Alex Johnson. It is old and cool IMO.
RAP is a good stopping place on a cross-country flight and I have stayed there 3 times over the years and always at Alex Johnson.

Yes, if a lunch counter is open to the public they should have to serve all the public without picking and choosing. Now tell it to Twitter and other public speech platforms.
And when someone walks into a lunch counter and starts screaming and threatening others, the owner is well within their rights to kick that screaming dipshit out.

So fucking what, right-wing authoritarian?

You gotta keep up with your talking points if you ever want to give your fascist heroes the hammers they want to smack the rest of us with.

First Nations should just install a toll gates at the hotel's entrances, a la Blazing Saddles.

A. Twitter is not a public speech platform. The internet is. Go fire up your old Geocities site and spout nonsense.

B. Tweets being blocked are creating hostile environments for others, thus making it not open to everyone. So the block of tweets and some people actually makes it safe for more.

C. Your comment here shows us exactly why the attack on education is so alarming.

Maybe I’m dense today - but I can’t follow that comment from what taj said. Thx.
He's trying to equate blacks not being allowed to eat at lunch counters back in the day to conservatives being banned from twitter today.

He can't tell the difference between racism and "if you don't follow the rules you will get suspended/banned"

Yet the lunch counter can require a certain amount of decorum from their customers such as wearing shirts and shoes and not disrupt the business.
Why can’t Twitter require the same?

To get back on topic: I hope the native population wins and gets this hotel to either undo that policy or shut down. There should be zero tolerance for that.

And yes, Taj needs some basic education on actual free speech rights. Even if Twitter were a public space as Taj defines them (it's not)... public spaces still have rules for behavior. If you spread harmful misinformation (like shouting "fire!") and hate speech in a town hall, you're still going to be kicked out and/or face legal repercussions.

Yeah the comparison only works if you take into account that what Republicans/conservatives are doing is shitting on the lunch counter then demanding that the diner smear their shit all over the entire country.

As usual right wingers show they don't understand analogies. That person on particular is a fucking moron who doesn't understand the difference between publicly traded and Public (as in government), among many glaring idiocies they've proudly decided to make sure we're aware of.

They will easily win their Civil Right suit, as the owner clearly discriminated against them based on race and posted their intent to do so publicly and then acted on that intent at least twice. It is pretty much as open and closed case as they come.
The more interesting one is the suit claiming that the hotel is on tribal grounds and that they are trespassing based on the 1868 treaty giving the black hills to the Tribe. That treaty has never been enforced by the US government, but based on several recent SCOTUS decisions it should be legally binding. And that opens another massive can of worms.

Bad analogy. Banning someone based on the individual's behaviour is not the same as banning a group based on demographic characteristics.

That said, I agree with your demand that Murdoch's newspapers and TV stations should be obligated to employ leftist commentators (in equal number to those of the right).

Odd though that when leftists asked for things like "the right of reply" in the past they were given lectures about how private ownership worked.

I wonder if the responses would have been different if this hotel had reacted by noting that the patron who shot someone was a man, and reacted by banning all males (of whatever race)?

I'm not sure I'm even making a political point there, as it seems like that argument could go either way.
