Owing to a desire to be entertained by TV on Netflix etc, and owing also to the paucity of good American programming to watch, I ventured afield and discovered a wealth of Korean Programming. The range of subject matter is good, from romance to adventure to fantasy to mystery to psychologically penetrating and the depth of humanity that permeates the subjects presented and the artful skill in the telling had made me a fan.

As a result, I now consider myself to be a world authority of Korean character. Take that with a grain of salt.

One of the main themes that run through so many series available to watch is a focus on the depths to which government had been corrupted by a lust for power and money, how deeply entrenched that power is and how widespread the corruption runs that protects it from public exposure. There is also a deeply ingrained cultural attitude regarding the importance of personal dignity and a desire not to lose face, profound respect for authority and for age. They even have different forms on honorifics built into speech that people are expected to obey as well as all manner of social rules regarding proper and polite conduct.

There is also a profound emphasis on pleasing ones parents, parental duties to children, children's duties to parents, etc. that create profound drives to become personally successful in life, with all the ups and downs that implies. Bullying in school, striving for placement in the best schools, drives to belong to the best professions, suicide and tremendous levels of stress and social stratification by class.

All these things and more create a society that is profoundly competitive with all the emotional coldness that implies, of course at least to anybody modestly psychologically aware.

And on top of that there is the issue of potential nuclear war with North Korea.

My view of the situation is that we are looking at a social upheaval bookmarked by two competing forces. On the one hand there is a profound distrust among the Korean people that its government is run ethically, and on the other, owing to real and palpable threat from the North, a need for strong and decisive government committed to protecting its citizens against that threat.

Yes, I think Trump using violence to suppress peaceful protests is highly likely. What they will do though is lie and say they were violent protests and then we will all treat it as a he said she said situation.
