Southern born and raised, though I have to confess I don't get the 'obnoxious redneck' thing. Of course, I've met obnoxious rednecks in rural New England, so it can't be just the south...

Oh, and there's lots to love about the south. Fried green tomatoes; real barbecue -- Mississippi sweet red sauce on ribs that have been smoking for about 12 hours; live oaks (evergreen broadleaf oaks that live on the Gulf coast); Waffle House; fried okra; fried dill pickles; fried turkeys...

Why do people always make moronic comments about no one wanting to live here? Some of the most active cities in the US are in the south (Charlotte, Atlanta, Austin, Dallas). These cities offer more promise than many other large cities, and many have a more concentrated Fortune 500 presence than cities outside of New York and Chicago.

I'm from Oklahoma, lived in the west, midwest, east and now south. I love my hometown in Oklahoma, but I love the south, especially Atlanta. Atlanta has an incredible concentration of beautiful women. I've never seen anything like it. Charlotte is a fine city as well.

The southern stigma only lives with the ignorants that haven't traveled beyond their region.

low cost of living, high wages, people that actually have manners coupled with women that know how to treat their man and know what fun is.

I'm checking in and loving it.

Very proud of being a southern-american.

I'll give you the woman thing. There's nothing like hot Southern boobies bouncing in your face followed by a big plate of sausage gravy and biscuits.

You forgot grits. Loves me some grits here in South Caka-lacky (South Carolina for those confused non-southerners).

Yes, I certainly did. I likes my grits with bacon.

I'm in North Carolina, but I don't think that's the South anymore. It used to be Southerners were all the people south of the Mason-Dixon line. I think the new criteria for being a Southerner is having at least one SEC team in your state, or living in Texas.

i despise the whole "South will rise again" thing but i do like the south in general. we have come a long way without losing the southern charm and gentile manners. couple that with some of the best most unhealthy food ever and you get a place that ain't half bad. I did purposely lose my southern accent so I'm not docked several IQ points outside of the south, but that's almost necessary lol. I love walking down the street and actually saying hello to everyone you pass, holding the door open for someone close behind you is a MUST, letting people out in traffic is extremely common and crime is low. Lots of great sports teams all within driving distance and the beach is only 1hr away. keep em coming guys.

*EDIT* Yeah AL has a couple SEC teams War Damn Eagle baby and the Tide can suck em.

Grew up in Chapel Hill, spent my 20s in Atlanta. I don't miss the humidity, or the rainy spells that last for months, or those little bastard yellow striped biting flies that orbit your head like a little bastard biting solar system.

But I miss Southerners every day. I miss their humor, friendliness and love of individuality. I miss knowing that there's a better-than-even chance of getting into a bizarre, hilarious conversation with a totally random person on any given day. People in the Midwest are so sterile and dull. Try to get them to talk about anything other than lawn care or KC's two mediocre sports teams and they just get uncomfortable and wierd.

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Maybe 50% of the people here are actually from the south.

the whole racism thing is ridiculous, the South probably has the LEAST racial tension of any region that has any appreciable amount of racial diversity. Saying that is simply ignorance. I really don;t like NASCAR however that's a NATIONAL sport so good job there. In breeding i'm not gonna touch, obviously incorrect. Trailer parks, ok so we have some of em, double wides are the ****** though man, live the DREAM baby!

Born in raised in South FL and now living in the ATL area.

I really don't care that it's the "South" or not and don't see what the big deal is either way.

<Lil' Jon>South Cackalacky......throw ya set up!

YEAH!!!!!!</Lil' Jon>

Born and raised in Greenville SC. Odd thing is, everyone thinks I'm a transplant yankee when they talk to me. They say I don't carry the accent. I guess I prefer proper pronunciation (say that five times fast). I must admit I do slip in a "y'all" and "ain't" in there every now and then.

As someone stated earlier the south is just "homeier". People here are mellow and friendly. The south is a place where you can meet your next best friend at a gas station, or even driving down the road.

The south is a state of mind that the rest of the country....hell the rest of the world, could use right about now.

I moved to Vegas for a year in 2004 from Atlanta thinking it would be such a great move and the culture shock would be awesome (gambling, alcohol on Sundays, Parump, NV) but boy was I wrong. Vegas is horrid compared to the good ole south and I promptly moved back home where I belong.

-Friendly people
-GREAT food
-Hospitality if you know where to look (Sorry but METs fans aren't going to see this )

what exactly are you proud of again?

In breeding, racial tension, cars parked on the front lawn, nascar and trailer parks...duh.

You know, it's funny. People are always bashing Southerners for being racist - and they do in fact talk a lot of racist trash. But in the South you see black people in all kinds of positions of authority - mayors, managers, principals, business owners, you name it. It's so common nobody even thinks about it. But here in the "tolerant" Midwest I hardly ever see black people doing anything but menial jobs. Maybe I'm not living in the right part of KC, but that's what I see.

I think a friend of mine put it best..."At least in the South, you know who the racists are. They don't try to hide it."
