Southpark 11-19 (Mormons)

Okay, there was a thread on "last night's southpark episode" for a different episode that someone bumped, but I thought this one deserved its own thread...

Did you guys catch last night's episode?

Whoa! Talk about ripping on the origins of a religion... They tore apart the entire foundation of the Mormon church. I figured they had to be making that stuff up, but what they depicted:
Joseph Smith spoken to by God
Angel leads J.S. to gold tablets buried in NY
The tablets were left behind by a group that came from Palestine around 500 B.C.
No one else got to see the tablets
Joseph Smith looked into a hat to read the tablets.
Someone else wrote down what he was reading - this became the Book of Mormon
The Angel took back the tablets for safe keeping...

BUT, on the other hand, they portrayed the Mormons as having better, more caring families. It's not how the church was founded, but that it teaches be kind to your family, neighbors, etc. The last line from the Mormon kid was the biggest put down of any of the southpark characters that couldn't be defended.

not too many people mind persecuting people for thier religious beliefs , be they muslims, jews, christians or some sub-sect

people these days generally avoid racism and other stuff that has become politically correct, but bashing peoples religion is still considered fair game by most americans

that is my experience

Race, gender, etc. are stuff you dont have control of, you are born with that. Believing in Scientology (for example) is a choice... and a stupid one (unless you joined for the tax shelter aspect). People who make stupid choices on other topics are ridiculed, so why show choosing to believe in something foolish be any different.

Case 1:
Guy A: "The moon is made of cheese, take a look at the pictures of it I took while I was there last weekend"
Guy B: *nods head, wonders what variety*

I think we can all agree that if the above happened, and you knew Guy B, you'd think he was a gullible fool.

Case 2:
Guy C: "The moon is made of cheese, I know because God told me"
Guy D: "Amen my brother! Preach on!"

Why is Guy D any less gullible/stupid than Guy B? Shall we protect him from ridicule just because he was easier to fool?

Thanks! I have all the episodes at home on one of my drives... (I delete them when the DVD's come out and get the DVD's instead.) There are 2 or 3 clips that work well for my classes at school (keeps the kiddos interested), but there are many more Simpson's clips that work into the material better.

Because they grew up in Colorado. One of the south park guys was the entire creative force behind the Movie Orgasmo, which is the story of a mormon missionary in the porn business.

To clarify it wasn't the story of the book of mormon, just the story of Joe Smith writing it. As far as that goes what they mentioned was pretty accurate, they left out stuff but I didn't see a glaring inaccuracy.

Told them am not interested and while i was closing my door, they keep talking.

They are from Colorado, which is close enough to Utah to feel the influence. If you have never been to Utah, you don't understand how thick the religion is out there. I went to high school in a small town near Salt Lake City, and I knew one kid during my fours years who wasn't mormon...just one kid.
