Yeah, it was good because well, it was just funny, and you also realized that the dum dum dum dum dum they'd been doing all throughout the episode wasn't just filler, but was really dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.
I already knew that before that part!

What part of the episode made it seem like Mormon's don't like black people? I can't remember.

that is my experience

Hmmm. How about all the people that were persecuted by religion throughout history? At least we aren't burning them at the stake or anything....

"All about the Mormons" was hilarious.

How accurate was their telling of the Book of Mormon?
To clarify it wasn't the story of the book of mormon, just the story of Joe Smith writing it. As far as that goes what they mentioned was pretty accurate, they left out stuff but I didn't see a glaring inaccuracy.
I disagree and I have extensive knowledge of Mormon history. There were many glaring inaccuracies. Not to mention it painted the whole thing in the worst and most biased light possible.

At least the ending was right.

Vic here is a clue for you. If you look at my profile you will notice I'm from SLC. I was raised in the mormon church and my family still are members, I attended services and instruction until the age of 18 including graduating from Seminary and taking collage courses at the LDS institute while in collage. I have heard the story of the discovery of the plates and everything depicted in the Southpark episode more times than you could ever imagine. I've also read 90% of the book of mormon more than once. I've also read large portions of the doctirine and covenants, book of abraham and the pearl of great price. I've recieved religious instruction in all books more than once in my seminary studies. With that said:

The story as presented was fairly accurate. I noticed no glaring error in anything they presented. The church itself will undoubtably deny the looking in the hat stuff these days as they continue to attempt to rewrite history that puts them in a bad light (the result of a prophit that started in and spent most of his career in the church's PR department). If you wish to debate any specific point of the episode I would be happy to point you to historical sources of reference that would confirm everything I remember in the episode.

Amish also grew up in the church and could likely confirm the episodes authenticity as well but I'm not sure he didn't get out sooner than I did and might not know as much about the theology. Besides with his taste in TV and movies he probably hates southpark.

Ummm what about the part with Martin Harris and his wife? That was a load a BS. The reason why he didn't redo that section of the BOM was because if he did then the people with the original could just change it and say it didn't match up to theres. But it's not surprising were often displayed as wackos might as well add some more stuff. I though the episode was pretty boring but i'm a mormon.

Isn't it just nice how the pick bits and pieces of a story to make us sound like wackos. Why didn't they tell the whole story instead of just part of it?

So their telling of how the book of Mormon came about was pretty correct? Am I reading right? (didn't read the thread word for word...)

It wasn't very correct at all. It was more of a point of view then anything.

A few things they left out....

Joesph Smith was 14 and was wondering which church was true to join because he wanted to join the right church. So he came upon the verse James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." So he went out to the woods and prayed and asked god which church he should join and god said none of them.. and it goes on...i don't feel like typing it all out.. if you want to know the TRUE history of Joesph Smith go to the link under this paragraph.

balls, the word was balls.

anyways, having now watched it (thank you replaytv), i have to say that they weren't really ripping on mormons... as always, southpark has the same enlightened viewpoint as i do... the beliefs mormons hold are pretty screwball, but hey they're nice and happy people so who cares.

How can people who knows the truth defend a religon that's based on a hoax?

Things that I found interesting:

--Joseph Smith's decision to join a Methodist Sunday school after receiving the First Vision, even after God had told him to stay away from all the other churches

--The lack of archaeological evidence for The Book of Mormon;

--Joseph Smith's bogus translation of the equally bogus Kinderhook Plates;

--Irreconcilable differences between the supposedly translated Book of Abraham and the Egyptian funerary texts Joseph Smith claimed were its source;

--False prophecies uttered by Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and other LDS leaders;

--President Brigham Young's bizarre teachings on Adam-God and blood atonement;

--The LDS Church's abusive patriarchal attitude toward women, and racisim towards blacks;

Uhhh, was your version of Southpark editted? I saw that part (although they didn't give an age of 14).
Ohhhh, I see, you just want us to click that link and read some literature... trying to do all your door to door work all at once, huh?

So do you not believe in any religions at all? I can also point things with other major religions that are fundamentally flawed.

I did. They said that Joe Smith didn't show the plates to anyone, but he did. There is a sworn statement in the front of the Book of Mormon signed by 11 men saying that they saw the gold plates.

I study a lot of different sects when I was in college. And the LDS church is one of the big religions where I found major flaws in. Sure, other major religions have flaws, but nothing earth shattering like that of LDS. I believe in a higher power, but it's definately not found in LDS church. Ok, I didn't research the JW or other minor secs, I should've done that for extra credits.

Did you know that one of the LDS Ex-President's grandson left the church in disgust ? I think his name's S. Benson. I don't know why he left, perhaps he found out the truth?

The episode was hilarious! I was unsure how much of it was based on truth and did some research the next day at work and for the most part they seemed pretty close to the stuff I could find, though some mentioned he was in a booth or behind a curtain of some kind when "reading" the gold plates as opposed to reading them inside a hat.

If I remember correctly, sometimes later, a lot of them left the Church and Joe Smith called them liars.

Yeah I bailed before I learned any of this stuff that was shown in the episode. I was approximately 16 when I stopped going. I've never actually read any of the documentation either.

That being said, I did laugh my ass off and do thoroughly enjoy South Park.

All my friends are devotees of the religion and return missionaries, but they haven't seen this episode yet. I'm still waiting for their critique.
