Interesting article:

http://gawker.com/we-drank-soylent-the-weird-food-of-the-future-510293401

So 24-year-old software developer Rob Reinhart created an open-source food-replacement drink, nicknamed Soylent of all things. My first thought was "oh brother", but then if you think about it, a lot of people live on Cheetos, Poptarts, Mountain Dew, and McDonalds, so this would be a real step up for a lot of people.

Not to mention not having to cook, not having to clean up your dishes, not having to spend time eating...eat when you want to, like on a date, but if you're rushing out the door, grab one of these, and if you're busy at work, grab one of these. The open-source formula is here:

http://robrhinehart.com/?paged=6

The ingredient list is here:

http://blog.soylent.me/post/51243920779/whats-in-soylent

The campaign, which is fully funded, is here:

https://campaign.soylent.me/soylent-free-your-body

A week's supply of Soylent runs $65, which works out to just under ten bucks a day. Not bad. The only two things that stand out to me are (1) developing an allergy from eating the same thing ever day, and (2) the effect not chewing solid food would have on your body (I remember reading somewhere that your teeth start rotting if you don't use your saliva to chew food on a regular basis, or something to that effect).

But overall, a pretty cool idea, especially if they could rotate ingredients so you don't develop an allergy (I believe the minimum rotation for allergy diets is 4 days) and maybe sell flavor packets sort of like the ones you put in water (Crystal Light etc.). Then you could just sit down to eat meals when you have more time/energy/money/whatever. I definitely wouldn't be against it...sometimes I'm so busy at work that dinner is all I get to eat for the day (which also turns out to not be bad for you...my buddy did the one-meal-a-day program for bodybuilding for nearly a year with awesome results). Very interesting project - it's definitely a niche that is wide open, I haven't seen anything on the shelf at my local supermarket that isn't oriented towards weight-loss or for dealing with health conditions.

I thought products like Ensure had this covered?

From their website:

No, Ensure Clear was formulated to be used as an oral product only. Ensure Clear is not a complete nutritional product because it does not contain fat and is not designed to be used as a tube-feeding or sole-source feeding product.

I think if they really wanted to market Soylent properly, they would do 2 things:

1. Have a 4-day rotational pack to prevent allergies

2. Advertise it as a "mostly meal replacement" plan, with solid-food meals at least weekly to keep your teeth & stomach going

But they again, a lot of different people already live on liquid food diets...vegetables in hospitals, certain prisoners, people who require a tube-fed diet, etc.

You can almost look at it as living off soup...nutritious, just liquid.

I've met a number of people locally who are doing the BodyByVi meal replacement drinks. It's a similar concept - a 'better' meal replacement product with some similar ingredients. They've had success losing weight, except it also seems to be a MLM and they try to pimp it to others.

I looked at the ingredient list and there's no mention of human ingredients. Didn't he see the movie?

Seriously the name is associated with something very objectionable.

Anyone remember the website back in the day that "sold" human meat for consumption?

That's not the goddamn joke. Did YOU see the movie?

Soylent green is what the population subsisted on almost exclusively, a.k.a an all in one food that sustains human life.

I don't think it's designed to, but you can chug it in one shot. I used to do that with protein shakes when I worked out (now stuff tastes better...cookies & cream protein shakes can't be good for you tho lol).

I don't think it'd be much of an issue as long as it's not too horrible tasting, since you can drink a 1,000-calorie Soylent shake in about 60 seconds.

I think I'll probably try this once it gets going. I eat the same stuff all the time because honestly eating takes time. I eat relatively healthy but for those just "keeping yourself " alive meals I don't care what I have but just have to be hassled with finding something healthy.

Plus I think it'd help me cancel out bad food as a possibility for my acne issues and help get the last two abs

Lol. Just came across this. Would be a fun to buy some of this and dye it green for Halloween. But not at $75.

This popped up in my news feed again. Some updates:

$65 a week or ~$3.10 per meal: ($255/mo shipped on discount) * Sold out until December
https://campaign.soylent.me/soylent-free-your-body

Older article, but I like the term "body fuel":
http://www.gizmag.com/soylent-future-of-food/27684/

An Ars editor is eating (drinking?) it for a week:
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...oderation-leads-to-actual-for-real-enjoyment/

Would love to try this, provided they can source some ingredients in a more allergy-friendly way (dairy/gluten/corn for me). When I'm busy at work, this would be great to chug instead of having to stop for a food break.
