I've decided to draw out my test for a whole month. I'll do 2 or 3 a day, and then a normal dinner. We shall see how this goes.

I got a whole bunch of the powdered a few months back.
I prefer the liquid, but powdered is cheaper.

I almost only have it for work lunch, usually. After a couple of months of this being lunch about four days a week, i can't stand it anymore, hah.
Really need to look into something to hide the flavour...course there's still the texture.

The whole feeling full thing went away fast, and i have to drink a fair bit to not be hungry once i got used to it.

Hate my shits on it too.

It serves a purpose, for cheap. That's about it.

I liked Soylent as a meal replacement for breakfast and lunch, but I switched to low carb after the holidays so I had to give it up.

I ordered some Ketochow as a low carb Soylent alternative. After being in ketosis for a month, my desire to eat went way down, so now I'm just doing one Ketochow shake and one regular meal a day. Ketochow is a little more complicated than Soylent. I had to buy a kitchen scale to weight out the 50 grams of powder that is needed. MCT oil and heavy cream are also required for the fat calories. I usually mix up 3 or 4 shakes at a time.

Soylent 1.6 powder was just released: (starts shipping next week)

http://blog.soylent.com/post/146357422357/introducing-soylent-16-powder

* Improved mouthfeel & taste
* 45% lipids, 20% protein, 35% low-glycemic carbs
* Added whole algal flour
* Added high oleic algal oil
* Replaced rice protein with soy protein isolate for improved nutrition & digestion

Mmm, lipid powders! :awe:

We are proud to announce Soylent 1.6 Powder, our latest iteration in convenient, complete powdered food. We have redesigned the formula to create a superior mouthfeel and taste, while still providing a nutritionally-complete staple meal. Containing 45 percent lipids, 20 percent protein, and 35 percent low-glycemic carbohydrates, this version has a macronutrient ratio closer to Soylent 2.0, while maintaining the flexibility and customization the community has come to enjoy from Soylent Powder.

In addition to sensory and macronutrient improvements, Soylent 1.6 is the first powder iteration to use whole algal flour and high oleic algal oil - innovative ingredients that are yet another step toward sustainable food production. We have also introduced soy protein isolate as the primary protein source, replacing the rice protein. Its benefits include a superior ratio of amino acids for nutrition and smooth digestion. Soy protein is isolated from other components of the whole soy plant and offers an exceptional level of purity from inorganic compounds compared to the rice protein. Shipping for Soylent 1.6 will begin next week. For specific inquries related to this iteration, please reach out to our Customer Care team at info@soylent.com.

Kaido are you still drinking this stuff?

Not so much, but not because it's not useful - I've been on food allergy medication for the last year & can have dairy/gluten again. I've also been using my Instant Pot for meal prep quite a bit. I wouldn't have a problem going back on Soylent, but I eat 7 small meals a day now & like that a lot...overnight oatmeal, energy bites, breakfast burritos, paninis, etc. What can I say, I like food

They have a new soylent coffee drink out, although I'm not a coffee guy so I'll pass on that one. They also have bars out, so I'll report back on how those go when my box shows up.

Got the bars in:

https://www.soylent.com/product/bar/

12.5% of your daily nutritional requirements:
  • 250 calories
  • 10g fat
  • 30g carbs
  • 12g protein
Ingredients list:

INGREDIENTS: Soy Protein Isolate, Corn Syrup, Rolled Oat, Canola Oil, Glycerine, Whole Algal Flour, Isomaltooligosaccharide, Isomaltulose, Maltodextrin, Water, Dicalcium Phosphate Anhydrous, Soy Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Salt, Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Oil, Dipotassium Phosphate, Modified Food Starch, Potassium Chloride, Choline Bitartrate, Mixed Tocopherol, Sucralose, Mono & Diglycerides, Magnesium Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, dl-alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Tricalcium Phosphate Anhydrous, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Niacinamide, Zinc Oxide, Copper Gluconate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Potassium Iodide, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin D2, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Sodium Molybdate, Phytonadione, Vitamin B12. Contains: Soy

Quick review:
  • They taste like butterscotch, not caramel. And not even like, strong butterscotch, but more of butterscotch aftertaste. They're actually pretty good.
  • They have rice krispies or something in it. Nice to have texture.
  • Funny aftertaste that grows as you eat it & kind of overwhelms the butterscotch flavor. I can't put my finger on what it tastes like. It's not gross, but it gets a little bleh as you get a few bites away from finishing the bar because that flavor kind of fills up your mouth.
  • I actually feel pretty good after eating it. I've tried a lot of different health bars over the years & a lot of them leave you feeling kinda crummy. This is legitimately like a little power-up bar.
  • Highly recommend drinking with milk due to the butterscotch flavor.
  • Going to try drizzling some melted chocolate over it to amp up the dessert flavor & see if that helps with the strange aftertaste.
  • Party line: Made in the USA, vegan, lactose/milk, nut-free (does contain gluten & soy, however).
I love the packaging, it's hilariously minimalistic:

Lest we forget our pop-culture jab: (note: the Soylent bar isn't actually organic or non-GMO)

The old bags beat the tubs in cost per unit by 40%, I have no idea why anyone would buy it in tubs.

Probably convenience.

I'll never go back to powdered soylent after 2.0 though, so it doesn't matter to me. Unless they start selling 2.0 in gallon jugs or something.

Yup, this is a good business idea on their part, but a stupid purchase for consumers. I wouldn't mind having, like, one, that I can always rely on when on the go or something. But then I got to thinking: it doesn't matter how much I intend to use, I can easily fill up whatever container size I want but emptying however many bags I want into a container. I don't even know why I still haven't done this. I eat Soylent for lunch less than I used to, but I love having it on hand.

Amazon’s delivered meals may not require refrigeration:

https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/11/amazon-mats-prepared-meals/

So on a tangent, Amazon is competing with Blue Apron & the like for delivered meals & make-at-home meals. The news bit is that they're also working on an MRE-style of meal that could potentially have up to a year shelf life. I recently tried a product like this from Hormel called "Compleats":

http://www.hormel.com/Brands/Compleats.aspx

* Shelf-stable
* Microwave cooks in 60 seconds
* Tons of flavors & meals available (including breakfast)

I had the chicken alfredo (160 calories, 16g protein, 18g fat, 28g carb) & it was actually fantastic for a "canned" item. A little over 4 bucks for the 10oz at Walmart online:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/HORMEL-reg-COMPLEATS-reg-Chicken-Alfredo-10-oz-Sleeve/10290980#about-item

It would be pretty cool to get delicious, easy-to-make food from our Amazon Prime overlords. Send it via drone, baby!

Big fan of the latest drink version:

https://www.soylent.com/product/drink/

Notes:

* $2.83 per 14oz bottle of the plain flavor (without subscription discount) & is also available on Amazon
* Shelf-stable when unopened (one-year shelf life)
* Easiest-to-drink version I've tried (easy to chug, not gritty, zero prep required)
* Aftertaste is exactly like the milk in your bowl after eating plain Cheerios
* No algal products (see the updates in this article)
* Shake it, drink it, then recycle the bottle (no dishes to do & no refrigeration required, unless you don't finish the bottle)

Macros:

* 400 calories
* 20g Protein
* 37g Carbs
* 21g Fat

Great for emergency food to keep in your desk drawer at work, in your trunk, at home, or in your bug-out bag. I try to do meal prep at home as much as possible, but I've been living on the road a lot for like the last six months & this beats eating out all the time when I don't have quality food available.

This is something I would get for survival rations if I was hiking or mountain biking in case I got lost for a week or two, along with water.

Ordered some, have you tried the other viarities?

I have. The current formula for Cacao is the best tasting flavored one, by far.

The Chai one tasted pretty decent but leaves weird flavors/smell in your mouth due to the way its spiced.

Coffiest is excellent but only if you like black coffee.

Vanilla cafe is not great. I gave away the box I had to a co-worker to try because it's not worth drinking IMO.

I agree with Kaido, the original tastes like Cheerios and it makes it really easy to drink. I keep a couple flavors at my desk and have one for breakfast to save time in the mornings. With the caffeinated flavors I can avoid the nasty coffee we have at work, too.

What would you compare the chocolate flavor to? I've been trying different chocolate milks from local dairy farms & for the most part, they are terrible - they taste like milk mixed cocoa powder instead of actual chocolate. The cocoa powder flavor just tastes bitter; it's like adding dirt to the milk. Nothing like a Yoohoo or even a Swiss Miss liquid chocolate experience.

Very cool Kickstarter project (starts April 16th) - Soylent noodles! Different company, but same idea - just with Ramen:

https://viteramen.com

Discussion thread here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/soylent/comments/88kksa/hi_rsoylent_my_brother_and_i_are_making_a/

Comes in 3 flavors:

1. Garlic pork
2. Soy sauce chicken
3. Vegan mushroom shio

Special notes:

1. Estimated cost is $3 per 500-calorie meal
2. Macros are 25g Protein, 73g Carbs, 12g Fats, 5g Fiber
3. Preparation is 4 minutes in boiling water (comes with a flavor pouch & Omega-3 oil pouch)

They're using a microwave-dehydration process, which has 3 benefits:

1. Dries the food
2. Par-cooks the food
3. Kills microbes

This process has 3 results:

1. Shelf-stable
2. No preservatives
3. Not deep-fried

True 'cheap Ramen' is deep-fried in oil at the factory so that it cooks quickly; the air-dried instant version takes about five minutes & isn't as cheap, so I think this approach is a good balance - four minutes boiled, $3 per meal (estimated), no deep-frying or junk ingredients, plus is far more healthy for you than the average noodle. REALLY cool idea!

I've been experimenting with a "bulletproof coffee" approach to breakfast:
black coffee (french press in my case, and strong)
1 tbsp butter (I prefer grass-fed for this - good fats for the morning)
1 tbsp liquid coconut oil (aka MCT oil, or fractionated coconut oil)
1 scoop protein powder (or whatever amount desired)
1 tbsp cream
blend

I've tried various versions of the above with almond flour, but while I love the overall taste, the almond flour just isn't blending well, ends up collecting in the frothy mix at the top and settling in the bottom. I need to try a steadier/longer blend with cream and flour, I usually pulse it so it doesn't get too thick, but the thickening may be necessary to get the almond flour to mix anything close to even "kind of well mixed."

I've been trying to kind of create more of a keto breakfast shake. But unfortunately it is neither quick nor as easy as even just a cereal breakfast, let alone an easy shake powder or ready to drink shake.

I still have a ton of Soylent powder - I drink it every now and then but am often going a long time between shakes. Taste nor effort is a hindrance (though keeping a blend bottle clean is at times, and yes I can be lazy especially with dishes), but I'm trying to change my approach all around. I might convince myself to drink a little more of it by blending a whole packet of the powder (in the large pitcher they give you in the first order), but I also would rather focus on trying to create a keto-style recipe that I can prepare ahead just as easily. I'm not worried about the micronutrients, because the multivitamin I prefer has largely superior sources compared to Soylent's vitamin blend (though it takes 6 pills to reach 100% via pill only, which I don't do).

You need an emulsifier/binder in there if you want the almond flour to blend well with the other ingredients in there.
