Picked one of these up on Monday. FYI, I also own 2 - Acer 22" and a BenQ 24". And, there's no doubt the Soyo is an 8 bit panel. Side by side, the Soyo looks as good as the BenQ. None of the washed out color or the backlighting thing. This thing is a steal.......

Well, in that case, this is beyond hot. Now I only need to decide between just this and the glorified NEC.

I got one. Even if this is a TN panel, I can live with that. But if Sikish and Martrox were right then this is a superb deal!!!

Thanks for the update: I'd checked previously and they weren't listed.

Puzzle: one person posted the extended warranty was $30 while the online price is much higher! Wonder what the diff is....

Hmm, going to have to go check out this monitor at the Officemax one mile away from work during lunch. If it does look like an 8bit panel, I might have to pick it up

Just stopped by OM to check this thing out. It definitely looks like an 8-bit panel. Viewing angles are great, looks the same from the sides as it does from the front. It's kind of funny, seeing it sitting next to all the crappy panels, when you step to the side they all wash out, but this thing looks perfect.

In conclusion, I'm very tempted to buy it (coming from a 19" Samsung CRT), but I'm worried about the lack of HDCP. Will this become a problem in the future?

After hearing all this talk about panel types, I decided to fire up my old 19" Fujitsu LCD and clone the Soyo and Fujitsu.

Now I understand about why people might not TN. When viewing from the sides the Fujitsu gets about 50% darker but as I scan vertically, I instantly notice the fujitsu getting a little brigher then go almost black as I look from the bottom while the Soyo is still more or less the same screen as if I am looking at a picture hanging on the wall.

So I am guessing my old 19" LCD is TN and the Soyo is something with better angles. Looking at my laptop, it behaves exactly the same as my 19" so I guess that is a TN as well.

What is a desirable panel type? Is one more expensive than the other?

depends on what you do with the monitor? refer to the LCD guide (stickied) in the video/display section. I know I can tell the difference between supposedely good LCDs and my old trinitron, so I am pretty certain I would be quite unhappy with a TN.

For what it's worth I'm a long time CRT hold out, I have 3 21" Trinitrons that are all colorimeter calibrated. I came into this LCD with every intention of returning it if it compared poorly but I've been quite happy with it.

As others have mentioned viewing angles appear to be quite good.

Just got back from the Mayfield Heights, OH(Severance Center) store with their last in stock. I called earlier and asked 'em to set it aside fer me.
I deleted all my OM coupons like a dumbie but hopefully they'll gimme credit when I get another tomorrow or Friday.
Lemme fire it up and see if I'm a happy camper or it's a crappy hamper.
Back a bit later with feedback...

For everyone who bought one... does yours run really hot? Mine runs hotter than my 42" LCD in the living room. The 22" LCD it replaced never ran nearly that hot.

wow guys. After reading the comments I promply called up my local OM and had them hold one for me. That was 30min ago and now I have one in my home. I'll see how it compares to my CRT since I mainly paint so color accuracy is very important to me. But from what I saw in the store, it looks pretty impressive. The viewing angle is definetly 170+ The box it comes in is huge too.

BTW for those who want it, here's my initial color calibration results. This was done using ColorEyes Display Pro with a DTP-94 sensor, this package costs more than the monitor.

Got one. It's S-PVA panel, same thing used in Dell 2407 and my Acer AL2423W. Great deal guys

Not that I don't believe you, but how did you confirm it's the same panel? Thanks.

I have Acer AL2423W wich is the same panel as 2407.. I had them cloned.
Vertical, horizontal angles are great same as AL2423W, colors are.. need adjustment but same.. it's S-PVA panel.
See it on display.

Here is a better test to find out if you have a TN panel...

http://forums.macrumors.com/sh...?p=4030905#post4030905

FYI, mostly all laptops use TN panels

Those RGB settings looked pretty bad when I used them on mine. What was your contrast/brightness set to?

Amen!
I turned down my contrast and brightness and things improved with settings close to Viper's but my blue is about 50

I have...

Brightness: 29
Contrast: 70
R:36
G:30
B:33

That matches whatever that default Nvidia control panel color configuration wizard without touching the software.

Did anybody notice that button 2nd from the bottom that allows some sort of color enhancement but the options say "Half, Window, Full, Off" That thing is wierd. Window does some sort of color enhancement to the top right corner of the screen. Half does the entire upper half.

When I first played around with it, I thought my video card was going bad as I only saw bits of the screen enhanced.

I'll try Viper GTS color profile when I get home

Those RGB values are the result of the hardware pre-calibration to a colorimeter measured 6500K whitepoint.

YMMV obviously.

Anybody buy the extended warranty? I'm thinking about going back to the store and getting it.

I have an older 21" S-PVA Samsung at work that I use daily and it does run very hot. If you put your face next to it, it feels like you can get a tan. Another sign that this is a S-PVA display.

I just got one and will try it. The one I saw at the store was on and really not hot. I think you may want to exchange yours with another one if heat is not like other lcd's.
