Soyo 6BA+III and Celeron2?

Does anyone have any experience using a FCPGA slotket and a Celeron 2 on the Soyo 6BA+III motherboard? I have this mobo, with a C366@550 right now, and I'm looking to eke that last bit of use out of it before I finally retire it and move on to something newer, but I'm frankly afraid of buying the C2 and slotket and finding that they won't work together. And of course, I'd be looking to crank it to a 100MHz bus. Anyone have words of wisdom to offer? Or, if nothing else, has anyone encountered relatively new BX boards that just won't work with the C2/slocket combo?

As long as you have the most recent BIOS, and a slocket that's FC-PGA compatible, there is no reason why the 6BA+III wouldn't work with a Celeron2.

brennan, I am using a Celeron II 533A@800 + a MSI Master slotket on my Soyo 6BA+III right now. It works great and has given me no trouble at all. With the new BIOS (2ba4 I think), the motherboard even detects the CPU as being a Celeron and everything. I upgraded from a Celeron 366@550 myself, and it was well worth it.

You guys rule. Hell, the way I figure, I can spend less than $250, get a C2, crank it to a 100MHz bus, throw a GeForce MX on there, and have a cheap as hell upgrade. Keeps the wife happy (little money), keeps me happy...ahhh...

Last question: is anyone aware of significant quality differences between slotkets, or is a generic usually okay? Thanks guys.

At that speed, just get a high quality slotket. I strongly endorse the MSI 6905 Master.

Never buy the generics. Slotket quality is very important when you want to overclock a CPU. Many have been burned by generic slotkets that hold them back from reaching speeds that are well within their CPU's capaiblites. You also need to make sure you get a slotket that has jumpers to support Celeron IIs (which is almost all of the new ones).

I would also reccomend that you buy a prestested Celeron II if your goal is a 100MHz bus speed and nothing less. There are some dud Celeron IIs out there that do not overclock much at all. Paying a few extra dollars ensures that you get what you want with no hassle. Compuwiz1 sells prestested Celeron IIs and will even include a slotket and cooler for you if you want. Just search the forum, he is easy to find.

Rob, the MSI slotkets are quite popular and sold at quite a few places. Just poke around for a bit at some online vendors and you should come up with something. Compuwiz1 might sell you one too, email him.

Tried Cel2 with the MSI slocket - refused to work, period, the computer wouldn't even boot up. Worked like a charm with Iwill Slocket II.
