Soyo Dragon plus using the on-die thermistor?

I was wondering if anybody knew if the Soyo Dragon Plus (KT266A) is using the on-die thermistor included with every Athlon XP. I have this board and as far as I can tell it includes no external thermistor in the usual places, i.e. the cavity under the CPU. At least it doesn't include a thermistor that is standard or easily recognizable. However, I've heard from several sources including the amdmb forums that no Athlon motherboard, esp. KT266A will include support for the on-die, built-in CPU thermistor. However, I am definitely getting fairly accurate cpu temp readings in the bios. Can anyone set me straight?

Thanks!

Any idea which component would be the external thermistor? I've scrutinized all the components in the CPU cavity and around the board and I can't identify what it would be. All the components I see in the cavity area where external thermistors are usually located look like resistors. If there is an external, it is no taller than any of the other components in the cpu cavity. However, if there is no external thermistor and the board is not using the internal CPU diode then where is it getting it's CPU temp reading in the BIOS?

Thanks again.

well, remember, there are manufacturers that utilize SMD resisotrs to measure socket-thermistor temps... MSI and Asus come to mind as manufacturers who do this.

So, hte Dragon + could easily be using an SMD resistor... the key to knowing this: Dragon + and T-birds give users "cpu temps"... .indicating that its still socket-thermsitor based.

Plus, if it was internal diode enabled, it would be well reported across the various internet communities.

As I recall, the external thermistor is right in the middle of the socket A (however it is possible I am recalling the KR7A--I've built 2 systems recently and can't remember if they both had it there).

That's exactly what I thought would happen, but of all the various reviews I've read of the Dragon, no mention has been made of it's temperature monitoring capabilities. Perhaps the configuration the Dragon employs is pretty standard these days. From my limited experience, I found it a rather strange sight to see no obvious thermistor. My MSI K7 Master had a long, flat bendable one while my Epox 8KHA+ had a short, nobby, stiff blue one. Perhaps no one mentioned it because it is a pretty common thing and I just hadn't run across it yet.

Either way, I think you're right, I'm pretty sure at one point soon after I got my Dragon, I did try my 1GHz T-Bird in it and I definitely remember getting a temp reading back, so that settles that, I guess.

Thanks for the help!
